The famous "Bear Sign" marking the start of the bushwhack:

Keith rocks the Doubletop canister (he's happy about it, I promise):

WARNING REGARDING BUSHWHACKS: "Bushwhacks" are hikes that go off of maintained trails and through pure wilderness.  Please make sure you are very confident in your ability to navigate through the woods without trails since it is very easy to get lost in these forests, especially in the summer.  Map & Compass REQUIRED. GPS is also recommended, but it is not a substitute for a map & compass and the skills to use them effectively.

---

The DEC limits group size in the Catskills to 20.

Nice bushwhack up the mountain. The slip and slides on the way down was great!

It looks like precipitation will start in the afternoon and continue overnight into Sunday. It should mainly be light, maybe a couple of inches total but that would be by midday Sunday. That's how it looks right now anyway.

Slight chance I will have to back out, Brent. Colleagues are taking me out for farewell drinks, so I am anticipating a nasty hangover.. (sad face)

I'm driving from Englewood NJ with room in my truck. I plan to stay overnight, hike Balsam and Eagle on Sunday and return in time for football on Sunday evening. Go Broncos! Please message me through my profile if you want to share a ride and/or room. Hoping to get into the Colonial Inn.

Hiya! Is there any chance I could grab a ride from someone from Hoboken/Jersey City/downtown NYC?

    January 26, 2014

  • Keith

I feel obligated to go on this hike simply to get a better picture of me on Doubletop's summit . . . I look like death warmed over, cooled off, tasered and then warmed over again in that photo. Did I post that photo after we did Doubletop in November?

"Actually, the tree the canister is attached to looks worse. What did you do to it Keith?" - Let's just say that it was completely consensual and leave it at that.

      January 22, 2014

  • Raj 🚶.

    January 21, 2014
