In this section of the Appalachian Trail (AT) we will be hiking the section south of the AT Metro North station as we close the gap on all sections of the AT in NY east of the Hudson River. If you missed a section I will be reposting them so there is another opportunity to fill in any missing sections.
Do not use the Meet-up map, it is wrong, use this link for the start location: http://goo.gl/maps/dLUO3.
We will be meeting at 9:10am (I can't set that on meetup so that's why it says 9am) so we can get going by 9:20am. (The time is set this way to coordinate with the train service)
In this one we have 13.2 miles and will take us from the Metro North AT RR station to Grape Hollow Road (Just basically the I-84 AT crossing,. The highpoints of the hike, A boardwalk and bridge constructed over the wetlands that help form the 'headwaters' of the Harlem River, the amazing views from Catrocks and the Dover Oak (the largest Oak tree on the AT) and scenic Nuclear Lake (yes you can guess how that name came about - yes you are most likely correct- but then again it is considered a cleanup success).
Though this is a 'easier section' of the AT, and have no high mountains to climb, this is still a 13+ mile hike and should not be regarded as a 'easy' or 'beginner' hike - it is not.
Afterwords we will stop at a nearby tavern for a drink and some food.
This is a car shuttle hike, we will be meeting at Stormville Mountain Rd (w/ Overflow parking at Grape Hallow Rd), the parking here is roadside. From there we will shuttle to the start, the AT Metro North station. Use this for the meeting place http://goo.gl/maps/dLUO3 . We want to leave the parking area at 9:20 am so try not to be late.
The only map sets I know about are the ATC guidebook and map set for the AT in NY along with their PDF map (free) available in smartphone app 'Avensa').
Metro North Option: This hike accessible by train and the start time is set so those who would like to take Metro North to the AT train station can leave GCT at 7:47 to arrive at 9:44 - you must tell the conductor that you plan to get off at the AT stop and be in the correct car. Let me know (post below) if you are taking the train. You will most likely be returning to NYC via a nearby Merto North station, not the AT station. Those who get off the train should Wait at/near the station for the caravan to arrive - we will be starting our hike at that station.
