Catskill Firetower Series: Overlook Mountain *Sunset HIke*

Catskill Fire Tower Series

Overlook Mountain

This will be a fast-paced hike with the goal of seeing the sunset at the top. Please keep up or feel comfortable hiking alone, as waiting for slower hikers will prevent the group from viewing the sunset at the top (trail is extremely easy to follow).  Sunset occurs at 7:50pm. and ideally the group will summit by 7:30pm. or earlier.

Total Mileage: 5 miles
Total Elevation Gain: 1400 feet
Estimated Hike Time: 2-2.5hrs
Special Gear / Requirements: Warm weather wicking clothing, food/water as you feel is appropriate, first aid, insulating shirt & rain jacket (just in case), trail conference map #141, headlamp & extra batteries, camera!

Meetup Times and Locations:
6:00 pm - Meet at Overlook Mountain Trailhead Parking

6:10pm PROMPT hike start time

Please be punctual, we will start promptly at 6:10 p.m.

Getting there: NY Thruway north to exit 19 – take route 28 west 6 miles then turn right on route 375. After 3 miles, route 375 ends and turn left on Mill Hill Road (route 212). After half a mile, turn right on Rock City Road (county 33) , then continue straight-ish on Meads Mountain Road up the hill to 357 Meads Mountain Road – parking area on right across from a monastery – 2.6 miles from town.

Route description: 5 miles distance, 1400 feet of elevation gain. We proceed along an abandoned dirt road for just under 2 miles to the 80 year old ruins of a great 19th century Catskill resort. We can take a moment to explore this historical marker if anyone wants to (likely on the way down in order to ensure seeing sunset). From the resort, we continue uphill for just over half a mile to the fire tower at the summit. Back the way we came.

Pace and Time: This is a straightforward hike that shouldn't take much more than 2-2.5hrs!

Group Size: The DEC limits group sizes in this area to 20.  If we have more than 20 we will split into two groups that are at least 15 minutes and 1 mile apart.

The Ruins:

POST HIKE ICE CREAM!  Jane's locally made Ice Cream served at Taco Juan's in Woodstock!  https://plus.google.com/106247002977236511675/about?gl=us&hl=en

Thanks for organizing this one, Matt & Joy - Overlook is always a good hike, and this one was no exception. We had some superb views of the setting sun from the summit, it was great meeting lots of new (to me) people and the food and beer afterwards at the Catskill Mountain Pizza Company really hit the spot. Hope to see you all again, soon.

Wonderful hike and great group! Also, I think we have a new craft beer destination in Woodstock...

The hike was great until the post-hike food and beer gathering, then all hell broke loose! Just kidding, for my first HVH (and meetup) experience, I could not have asked for anything better! Great, friendly, and interesting bunch of people, great sunset views, and of course the food and beer couldn't be beat! Thanks much Matt and Joy for setting this up.

I may get there a few minutes after 6 as I'm leaving work at 5. Should be there before 6:10, but if not, start without me and I'll catch up.

Heads up regarding Taco Juan's (for those who are going to head there for ice cream or other food afterwards): They don't accept credit cards if you don't have one with a PIN. I THINK they can charge it to an ATM or credit card if you have a PIN for it (and there's a $1 surcharge for that), but otherwise you'll need to pay in cash. You may want to give them a ring and double check if you plan on going and won't have cash on you.

no problem, thanks for letting us know!

Hi! I'm wondering if I can do a +1 for my fiance? I don't see an option here.

    May 5, 2014

    • Matt N

Hi Heather. Everyone is required to join Meetup and sign up for the event (due to the liability waiver). He is welcome to join up...but if it's too short a time to do so before the hike, then of course he can come as your guest!

Been a long time since I've been out with this group...excited to get back out.

Looking like great weather tomorrow! Mostly sunny and decently warm...highs on the mountain likely mid to upper 50s, maybe dipping into the low 50s/upper 40s as we come back down.

See you all tomorrow for what should be a great sunset!

    May 5, 2014

  • Matt N

Rain just about to get to the Catskills now and will likely be raining through 8pm or so. I am postponing and will try again next Tuesday 5/6.

    April 29, 2014

    • Stew M.

Sorry about the rain tonight, but hoping I'll be able to make it next week (if my sore back cooperates...).

      April 29, 2014

  • Stew M.

Hi Folks, Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to make the hike as I hurt my lower back a couple of days ago, and it's still bothering me quite a bit. With the weather forecast, you might have to 'imagine' the sunset, but should be a great time nonetheless (especially the ice cream!)! Hope you guys plan more trips in the area; I'll most certainly be joining you.

    April 28, 2014

    • Matt N

Sorry to hear about your back, hope it gets better soon. We will be doing more hiking in this area over the coming weeks for sure!

      April 28, 2014

    • Stew M.

Thanks much, Matt. Looking forward to future hikes.

      April 29, 2014

  • Katrina

Admittedly, I don't like to hike in the rain unless I have to....So I'll go ahead and cancel now and that will either make it so that I don't have to cancel last minute, or that it doesn't rain and you guys have a great hike! Next time!

    April 29, 2014

  • Matt N

Weather Update: Our chances at seeing a sunset are pretty low at this point. Good chance at some light showers across the region, but still a chance that it could remain to the West.

At this point, the hike is still ON! If it is looking like a more steady/moderate rain tomorrow, I will cancel and reschedule.

I will update this meetup by 230pm at the latest based on the radar, etc. If the hike goes on, bring a rain jacket and some warmer clothes...it will likely be in the upper 40s to near 50 at hike time!

    April 28, 2014

  • Matt N

Hi all, Keeping an eye on the weather. Right now looks like a chance at a few showers and mostly cloudy. May be a chance at a sunset, but not looking likely.

As long as it is not a wash out/steady rain, we will be there as we need the exercise.

Will update the forecast tomorrow, and keep an eye on it Tuesday morning as well!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
