Following the cove out into the Hudson River, the island directly to the west of the Environmental Center is Esopus Island.

North of Norrie Point lies  Mills Mansion on the eastern shore and beyond the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse. The  Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, also known as the Maid of the Meadows, was dark for nearly 40 years until it was re-lit as a private aid to navigation along the Hudson River on May 31, 2003. We will dock on the lighthouse and enjoy the steps. The lighthouse itself is locked preventing us access inside.

The lighthouse was originally built in 1838 to warn mariners of the dangerous shallows and mud flats between the lighthouse and west shore of the River.  The lighthouse is currently owned by the Save Esopus Lighthouse Commission.

After visiting the lighthouse we will paddle to the Mill Mansion estate for a brief walk to the mansion  before paddling back to Norrie Point. Now owned by the State of New York, Mills Mansion was once the country home of Ogden Mills, son of a banking, railroad and mining tycoon, and his wife, Ruth Livingston Mills.Completed in 1896, the house was transformed into a beaux-arts mansion of 65 rooms and 14 bathrooms that was a gathering place for the Gilded Age's boldface names. The front portico was just completely renovated and is worthy of admiration and photographs.

Launch Area Information: Follow the Norrie Point State Park signs from Route 9 (Staatsburg, NY) into the park and follow the signs for the Marina.  There is a hand launch in the cove east of the Norrie Point Environmental Center, look for the stone steps.

NOTE: You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid, and lights. You should review maps and tide charts carefully; understanding these is key to knowing where you're going, and how to get back. The ability to swim and previous paddling experience is a pre-requisite for this trip.

I'll meet you on the water as I'll launch from The River Connection Boathouse at Hyde Park Landing. If there's wind look for a sail on a kayak coming up from the south.
