A robotic baby harp seal invented by Japanese engineer Dr. Takanori Shibata will be visiting our next meetup group. The PARO seals are marketed as therapeutic devices designed to comfort people who have dementia, autism, or other issues that contribute to social isolation.
This particular robot seal is named 'Alice Fay' and, as you interact with her, don't be surprised if you experience a sense of calm and even childlike wonderment. Research findings have indicated that the robots have a positive, clinically meaningful influence on quality of life, increased levels of pleasure and reduced displays of anxiety on dementia patients in a residential nursing home.
Join us as Corey Tague, LRT and Director of Education for ACH Health Services explains "The PARO Effect" and allows 'Alice Fay' to demonstrate her soothing abilities.
But don't take my word for it. Here is a short video clip from an early 10 month observation of how residents at a Japanese nursing facility progressed after a Paro seal was introduced to their surroundings. http://youtu.be/3npV-npZkxI
CEU's will be offered for Social Workers attending this program.
This event is sponsored by Serenity Rides offering senior transportation and more.
