Another idea! :) This would be a field trip, and I have an SUV...

  • There's this place called The Monarch Program in Encinitas (north San Diego County)...Totally worth the drive. It's a butterfly vivarium, to me, much more exciting than the vivarium at the L.A. County Natural History Museum, because you can buy caterpillars and buy the plants they eat, and plant them, so that you have a little butterfly heaven in your backyard.

The guy who runs it is a professor at UCSD, I think, and is a grumpy genius, friendly upon occasion, but never hostile. :) He knows everything there is to know about butterflies, and I find him fascinating...and walking around the vivarium and having butterflies land on you...or picking them up delicately (you're allowed to) is simply sublime. I'd want to be a driver after I get to know a few more of you, so that you know you want to be in my car, and I know I want to be in your car. :)

Ooo, just realized the comments are from 2011... is this still a potential event idea?

Orilea, always encouraging! This is only for part of the year. I think the vivarium opens in April or something like that, and I may need to bring my daughter because my husband may be traveling in April for work. It is so fun though...and the drive is so worth it. It's like a two hour drive (maybe less) to heaven for me. :)

Wow-so fun! Is this only for part of the year or year-round? Trying to get a feel for when we have the option to schedule this... I'm caring for a post-surgical rescue puppy with massive separation anxiety, so it would need to be at least a couple weeks from now so he's all healed up :)
