Interactive Art Director-Summary

My clients User Experience team is a small team of seasoned practitioners and leaders responsible for creating a world-class online experience for the leading global news analysis site with a sophisticated, demanding and international audience. The team contributes to an ambitious new online strategy with experience planning and customer insights, and executes on the strategy with information architecture, interaction design and visual design, in close collaboration with technical and marketing teams.

The Interactive Art director will collaborate with the senior experience architect on leading the redesign of my clients online presence. The role will be responsible for creative direction and hands-on design work, drive conceptual and visual development, develop interaction and design patterns for my clients user experience guidelines, and lead and inspire a team of in-house and contract designers who are responsible for designing the core site and products as well as support the sales and marketing team.

We are looking for a strong, experienced interactive designer who is ready to take the leap to a next level in their career. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years experience designing major websites in an interactive agency or client-side, at least 2 years working for a major publisher, will have superior design skills and have successfully presented ideas to executive management as well as lead and inspired designers.

The Interactive Art Director works with information architects, editorial and product teams to understand business goals and with designers and developers to guide the prototyping and implementation process.

Projects include Web sites, applications, products and services for other delivery platforms.

This position may require travel once a quarter.

Key accountabilities 


·         Create and develop a visual language that supports brand and strategy

·         Define appropriate styles and language elements for new product experiences.

·         Ensure the integrity of any design from inception through implementation and delivery

·         Present ideas, concepts and reviews to management and function as creative lead on all projects

·         Provide art direction, leadership and inspiration to team members (employees and contractors)

·         Expand, refine and execute designs

·         Work collaboratively with experience architects to develop innovative designs. Translate wireframes and requirements into visually compelling and attractive designs that support a superior user experience

·         Design interfaces of various media properties and channels, including Web and mobile

·         Design experiences ranging from highly interactive, immersive products to optimized online reading

·         Design online marketing campaigns (including microsites, ads, widgets, emails).

·         Advocate for and champion a user-centered design and development process

·         Maintain and share awareness of industry trends and new technologies and explore those that would benefit the business and the audience


Education and training

·         BFA, MA or MFA in graphic design or similar field

·         Active, current participation in relevant professional training (classes, conferences)


Required work experience

·         At least 5 years of experience designing web sites as “interactive designer” or “art director” in an interactive agency or client-side

·         At least 2 years designing for a major publisher

·         Strong interactive design portfolio (online portfolio required)

·         Proven experience creating successful, large-scale, consumer-facing sites

·         Proven aptitude for quick creative thinking with attention to detail within demanding deadlines

·         Demonstrated ability to produce user-centered solutions

·         Proven experience in working with cross-functional teams

·         Proven experience leading and inspiring teams, whether in a formal leadership role or leading without formal authority

·         A plus: Experience designing news sites


Required skills and knowledge

·         Strong visual and interaction design skills

·         Strong understanding of user-centered design methodologies

·         Fluency in best practices for interactive design

·         Ideally: Excellent online typography skills

·         Experience working with major brands

·         Experience developing design and interaction patterns, style guide

·         Excellent written and oral communication skills

·         Readiness and ability to communicate ideas and concepts to executive level

·         Ability to interpret needs, objectives, and direction from multiple
sources of input

·         Comfortable working in a small team

·         Team-oriented, collaborative approach to creative development

·         Familiarity with technical issues around web development and ability to work constructively with development teams

·         Comfortable working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment

·         Advanced skills and flawless execution in design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Flash etc.)

·         Excellent understanding of HTML/DHTML, CSS, Web 2.0 (ideally PHP)

·         A plus: Drupal theming experience
