Donald Norman on the Design of Everyday Things in the 21st Century + Book Signing

The Design of Everyday Things was first published in 1988. Even though the fundamental principles of human interaction introduced in that book are still true, a lot has changed since then. The examples in the book reveal its age: "What is a slide projector?" students ask me. But more importantly, the technology of interaction has changed. Oh yes, we still have doors and switches, faucets and taps to bedevil us, but we now have intelligent machines, continuous interaction with large data sources and social networks that enable life-long interaction with friends and acquaintances across the world.

***NOTE: The book signing will take place before and after the event. Be sure to bring your books with you that evening as books will not be sold at the event. Cash will not be accepted at the door for either registration or books.***

Technologies disappear, but the needs they satisfied often remain. Phonographs, slide projectors, and film have disappeared, but music, illustrated talks, and photographs still exist. As technologies change, what design rules must change with them? What must stay the same?

DOET lasted 25 years, from 1988 until 2013. What should the DOET of 2038 look like? What principles should it contain?

Don Norman is both a businessperson (VP at Apple, Executive at HP and an academic (Harvard, UC San Diego, Northwestern, KAIST). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group where he helps companies make products more enjoyable, understandable, and profitable. He is an IDEO fellow. He is one of the founders of CHI and received their Lifetime Achievement award. He is author of numerous books, including “Design of Everyday Things,” “Emotional Design,” and “Living with Complexity.”

I would like to take the time to acknowledge the incredible amount of work done by Alberta Soranzo. And, we couldn't have done it without the help of Alexa Roman, Jason Gillard, Lara Fedoroff, Arturo Perez, Nate Uchida, Jane P.Y, Su, Noel Saw, John Ayers, Vanessa Zamora, Joe Welinske, David Nguyen, Mario Noble, Sylvia Hysen, Luke Swenson, Anita Cheng, Michelle Jensen, and the 65 volunteers. It was Alexa who helped us connect with Don Norman for the event. And, on another note, it was fantastic to celebrate reaching 3,000+ members at the Don Norman event.

I read the Design of Everyday Things back in the early 90's as it was assigned reading for one of my psych classes at the University of Toronto, and once I read it, I never viewed the world around me the same again. It was a part of what inspired me to become a graphic designer, so it was wonderful to be able to attend his talk over 20 years later - now that I have discovered UX - the perfect marriage of my two passions. I only wish I still had my copy so that I could have met Don in person and had him sign it. Thank you to all the organizers and to Mr. Norman for taking the time to come to LA to speak to us.

An incredible event! LAUX has the unique power to draw a large, passionate, engaged crowd. My favorite part was when Don talked about design education. I think that is a crucial part of positive change. Thank you Crystal, Alberta and Lara!

This Meetup was definitely worth the drive west on a Friday night, and I came from Glendale. Don's talk was inspirational, funny, and enlightening. The event was very well organized and my only minor comment would be that the room got quite warm, and perhaps the AC could have been cranked up a bit. Otherwise, much thanks goes to Crystal and everyone else who made it happen!

A friend (Interaction Designer at Yahoo!) introduced me to Don's book back while I was in marketing. It was enlightening to see him speak 4 years later, especially right after changing careers to enter the UX field.

Also, I enjoyed finally meeting the members of the LAUX community before heading back to SF. It's really admirable how much effort everyone put into this -- especially you Crystal! Congrats again on 3,000+ members.

Looking forward to attending another event. Blog recap coming soon...

Don Norman is an entertaining and inspiring speaker. I was Dr. Norman's student at UCSD and I used his advice and read his books throughout my career. His messages have gotten even better with age and experience. At the end of the meeting I got the honor of having Don show me the Uber app to call a ride to the airport. It was fun to watch the "black car" move along on the map on Don's cell phone and then appear in front of us in real life.

Before the end of the year we will have the Nick Finck event, a panel discussion on the skills needed to work in the field of UX, and maybe something social and fun. We now have 3,000+ members, which we just reached recently. So, we have a lot to celebrate. We had our most active year this year with some shockingly great speakers. And, our events are now being featured in UX Magazine courtesy of L. Swenson and M. Dandurand and (http://uxmag.com/articles/understanding-the-importance-of-user-research-with-steve-portigal)

    Hi Crystal,

I'm curious, what exactly does the money we are paying to PayPal cover? Where does the money go? Thanks for the full disclosure. I'm curious because this is the first LAUX event I've ever paid for.

    Thanks,
    Monique

    November 3, 2013

    • Crystal Ehrlich, UX D.

The funds are being used to cover the event and Noel has outlined many of the costs, but not all, of them. Please check out the volunteer page, where 100+ folks will be able to attend for free. In the list of volunteer tasks, you can see some of the expenses we need to cover.

Going forward there will be times when there are charges for events. As the group grows and changes, I hope everyone is able to adjust. If $5.46 is too expensive for anyone who would like to go, please sign up to volunteer. We would love to have you participate.
