The Nuances of UX

When doing any kind of design work, the devil is always in the details. It is easy and often important for us to quickly rush through our wireframes and prototypes to meet a client deadline, but as professionals we must not overlook the subtleties that can turn a good experience into a great experience. This talk is about the little details we see in apps and websites we use every day, but often fail to notice. We fail to notice them because they provide for a much smoother user experience. You will learn how to design for these experiences even with a tight deadline and within a agile workflow. We will also explore a deeper understanding of our role as designers and how we can have a much greater impact on the lives of those who use our designs. After this presentation you'll never look at another app or website the same way again.

Nick Finck is a user experience professional who has worked in the web industry for over a decade. He specializes in information architecture, interaction design, usability and user research for web and mobile.

Nick has created web and mobile experiences for Fortune 500 companies including Adobe, Intel, REI, Boeing, Google, and He lives and plays in Seattle, Washington, where he’s the Senior Manager of User Experience at Amazon AWS, a highly reliable, scalable, low-cost infrastructure platform in the cloud.

Prior to working at Amazon, Nick was the Director of User Experience at a number of agencies including Ubermind, projekt202, and Deloitte Digital. Before that he was founder of Blue Flavor, a user experience consultancy that launched one of the very first web applications for the iPhone.

Following up on Crystal's request, the Alfred Mann Foundation ( is seeking a UX/UI designer for a product that will be used by clinicians to interact with sensors that are implanted in amputees to help them to control their prosthetic devices with dexterity. This is one of those opportunities where your work will directly help to improve people's lives (whether used in a clinical or research setting). It is currently a contract position, spanning roughly a year. A few of you approached me after Nick's presentation, but if we didn't get a chance to talk, feel free to email me ([masked]). Thanks!

Microsoft's space is great, definitely fitting for the vibrant crowd. Parking was plentiful for the meeting time. Security guard was a champ for helping _everyone_ out of the slow-ish automated gate.

Thanks Nick for the pyrotechnic insights… and do I dare use the phrase "keeping it real". Love the questions/challenges you shared to all UX practitioners. It seems we may be moving into a time where we it may be less about delighting the user, and perhaps more about delighting the entire planet. LOVE IT!

Work/Life balance is now Work/Life/Tech balance -You nailed it - so the discussion has shifted from creating great ux - to creating a great life.

Here is the parking information for Monday's event with Nick Finck at Microsoft. Please park in the second lot. When you enter the parking lot, you will get a parking ticket stub from the machine. Parking is free if you get the parking ticket stub validated. Microsoft wants to validate all parking ticket stubs for attendees. If you follow the steps, this means your parking will be free. If you don't get your parking ticket stub validated, then you will have to pay.
