Eric Reiss on Usable Usability: Simple Steps for Making Stuff Better

Please join the LA UX Meetup as we present an evening with Eric Reiss to celebrate the publication of his new book, Usable Usability: Simple Steps for Making Stuff Better -- now available on Amazon. Eric, a world renowned presenter will be sharing his experience of  how to understand user’s needs, techniques for exceeding user's expectations, and a host of hard won advice for improving the overall quality of a user’s experience. The talk will be followed by a book signing and social time.

Eric Reiss has been meddling with service- and product-design projects for longer than he cares to remember. Today, he is CEO of The FatDUX Group, an international user-experience design company headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. Eric has also lectured on design principles at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, is a former Professor of Usability and Design at the IE Business School in Madrid, and serves on the advisory boards of several universities and institutes in both Europe and the United States. His Web Dogma, a design philosophy that transcends both fashion and technology, has been adopted by 1000s of developers and companies around the world.

This is also your chance to check out our host, Cross Campus --, a state of the art 11,000 square foot engine of creativity and innovation located in the heart of Santa Monica.  The goal of Cross Campus is to inspire creative collisions through space design, learning platforms, and extraordinary events, fostering member-driven collaboration that ultimately leads to game changing ideas and enterprises.

Great candid presentation. You could tell he loves what he does and admitted - we are always learning this stuff as we go along.

Last night's meetup was the first time I had any experience with Eric Reiss (I am a product manager seeking to improve my usability thought process). I walked away totally happy with the learnings I gained from his talk and am purchasing his book now. Very straightforward, simple concepts brought to life with images to drive the point home. Thank you for offering this meetup!

Amazing and inspirational presentation! It was great to see and hear from someone who experiences the world in a similar manner that I do. Always seeing things from the experience perspective, and wanting to make them better!

Aside from the blatantly sexist comment in his presentation, I enjoyed hearing Eric speak. I would have enjoyed seeing more successful usability examples. There was an abundance of what doesn't work.

Eric Reiss was an amazing speaker! When talking about Scrum, he said "think of Christopher Columbus sailing back every 3 days to describe how far he got"! And, "if content is king, context is the kingdom." There were some other great quotes too. I'd just buy the book to make sure you get the benefit of his wisdom.

Eric Reiss is gave us a good framework for breaking down the construction of a customer experience--and a business--that will succeed. It brings to the foreground all the reasons why we got into the business. It also marks a timely second wave of commentary on information architecture, interaction design, and usability, building on the work from a decade ago by Jesse James Garrett, Christina Wodtke, and others.
But he needs to get out of Copenhagen more often, if you get what I'm saying. Calling out the absurdities of the modern world is not enough. Some of the rhetorical setups came dangerously close to backfiring with the CA audience. And we were missing 2 things. First, his perspective on UX in the EU. Second, a tie to what is going on today with UX and startup culture, which are merging. This could have added a layer of relevance that entrepreneurs could appreciate better. But taken as a POV for business builders today, this was a great presentation. I'm eager to read the book.

I'm sure the presentation is going to be awesome. Eric Reiss is such a dynamic speaker. And, if all goes well, we might have video of the event to share with everyone. For those who are attending, don't forget there will be a book signing tonight. Be sure to bring your Eric Reiss books with you. See you at 7PM sharp at Cross Campus.

Please join me in thanking Cross Campus, Science, Inc. and TechJobsLA for their sponsorship. We are thrilled that Eric Reiss will be speaking on Usable Usability: Simple Steps for Making Stuff Better tomorrow at 7PM. The event would not have been possible without their sponsorship and without the generosity of Eric Reiss. It's so cool Eric to have here! Yay!
