Lean UX with Lane Halley, Jaime Levy and Chris Chandler

Lane Halley will start off the evening with a presentation about how UX thinking can help Lean Startups, and how UX methods can be adapted to be more quick, visual, collaborative and continuous. Afterwards, Chris Chandler will interview Lane Halley and Jaime Levy on topics related to Lean UX strategy and practices for startups and enterprise.

Lane Halley is a product designer at Carbon Five, where she uses lean design and agile construction methods to create Web and mobile products. Lane’s a popular teacher and speaker on the subjects of user experience (UX), Lean Startup, Agile and product design. Recent speaking engagements include The Lean Startup Conference, QconSF and Agile UX NYC.

For more information, you can read her blog "The Apprentice Path" or follow her on twitter.

Jaime Russell Levy (Wikipedia article and LinkedIn profile) has been a pioneer for over 20 years in the creation of innovative browsing and non-linear storytelling experiences for products and services distributed on disk media, mobile devices, the Web and iTV. These days she runs a User Experience Strategy and Design practice in Los Angeles called JLR Interactive that caters to "lean" startups, helping them transform their business concepts into sustainable and scalable online solutions.

Throughout her career, Jaime has been a part-time college professor. She taught at NYU ITP for seven years and is currently teaching User Experience Design at UCLA Extension for the Fall/Spring quarters.

Chris Chandler is User Experience Director at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Online and the founder of The Los Angeles User Experience Meetup group which he started in May of 2007. If you haven't seen this New York Times' article about his and his team's work, you must check it out. Chris Chandler will also be speaking at The IA Summit in April in Baltimore.

This is also your chance to revisit our host, Cross Campus --, a state of the art 11,000 square foot engine of creativity and innovation located in the heart of Santa Monica. I love the expression "design debt" in Lane's presentation. It really helps to drive understanding that design based only upon assumptions is expensive. Also enjoyed Chris and Jaime's sense of humor: "Lean UX is what you're doing now, only faster." and "eHarmony for your shit"

A great overview and discussion of the basics, origin and application of Lean UX. I was impressed with the caliber of the presenters. One star held back for the start and end time issues. I'd only hold back half a start, if I could.

Winning Analogies (Lane)(old school software dev process): 1st place-- "Like inmates in the asylum" 2nd place-- "Plan, Build, Test, Ship, T-shirt" // (Jaime)(Product description): "It's like eHarmony for your sh*t."

Good overview of the subject. Good speakers. Only suggestion is to turn off the twitter wall projection during the presentations. The reptilian brain is constantly distracted by the motion, making it extra hard to focus on the presenter. It's akin to a "punch the monkey" banner ad on research blog post. Out of respect to the presenters, please turn that twitter wall off so we can focus on the content.
Thank you for putting it all together!

It has been said that culture eats strategy for lunch. Many times the transition to a more Lean or Agile UX strategy is defeated by established cultural norms which prevent and even reject the change. What are some techniques that have been useful for the speakers when they have helped UX and the organization around them transition to Lean ways of working?
