I've always liked the column-based drilldown approach, as in the MacOS Finder column view.
Alternately, have you considered whether there is a different way to organize the information? People outside the computer field often have a hard time understanding deeply nested hierarchies, regardless of how they are presented. Is there any way to flatten the taxonomy?
