Displaying user location, best practices

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any research on best practices for displaying user location in a location-based app (within the US). My interest is not in design issues like placement or font size, but rather the actual text itself.

In other words, are users expecting to see a ZIP? A city/state? Text that says "current location"? Should it always be consistent or should it vary based on the method of user input? Things like that. I've looked at a number of location-based apps, and there doesn't seem to be a dominant pattern.

Anyway, any articles, papers, or informed opinions on this topic would be much appreciated. Thanks!
