I really like TED's (http://www.ted.com/) faceted search & discovery "engine": multiple facets, creative categorizes, and the search results in a restructuring of the accompanying visual matrix (not pictured below).

Below the discovery engine is another search opportunity: a Boolean operator consisting of a customizable  "time" category AND a fixed category that allows one to choose from the same interesting descriptors used by the discovery engine.
