Meetup Description: This months meeting follows a meeting we cancelled due to snow in Decemeber. The market is in a confirmed rally but continues to face pressure from the recession issues. We have a lot material to cover.
We could not get the regular large meeting room in the downtown Bellevue library and probably will not get it again until school is out due to library sponsoreed activities that book the room ahead of us. We continue to seek alternate sites but this meeting is at the Newport Way library(get directions by clicking on the library name below). We have used their room before and it is acceptable for up to 20-25 people but tight. Watch close for the sign on Newport way. It is easy to miss and on the right side on a curve.
I still suspect the current rally is a bear market rally. But remember that government is going to throw a lot of money at the problem so when the turn comes we should have a whopper of a rally and some trading rallies before then.
I have remained in cash and hope you have too with the majority of your portfolio. If one is very nimble some shorting possibilities with stocks or options are out there, and I have seen some breakouts for the few fundamental and technical leaders that were tradable long. The market is is trading primarily on technicals and volatility which is characteristic of a bear market.
I found some very interesting new interactive charts that compare the index performance before, during and after famous recessions and the related bear and bull markets. At the meeting we can continue the discussion started last time on what to expect from here based on history. I will present my current market analysis as well. I hope others in the group will share what is or is not working for for them.
Most importantly, I have scheduled the next two combined area IBD Meetup Outreach meetings for March 3 and April 7. Please get these dates on your calendar and start promoting to your friends and relatives now. Tim Reazor is not available for the March meeting so Ted Laplatt is the speaker-he was with us last April.
For you old hands, we have worked out the obstacles for the after meeting advanced Q & A session like we had with Ted before,so I think everyone will get value out of the sessions.
Again, please RSVP your intentions. Newer attendees see below the signature line for more information especially for you about this meeeting.
Below is information particularly helpful for those of you considering attendance for the first time.
What we do in the meeting-
The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm but I usually have the doors open by 6:00pm. You are welcome to come early to socialize or network with others in the group. We need help setting up tables and chairs before the meeting and tearing them down and stowing them at the end of the meeting. Your help is appreciated.
The meeting usually begins with introductions and a listing of questions or topics members of the group want covered at the meeting. I will present a stock market review. I will be prepared to discuss my recent and current stock picks. I am inviting other members who use the CANSLIM research methodology to help too.
You are invited to share your CANSLIM stock picks or ideas from your holdings or watch list for analysis at the meeting as well. We usually have a special presentation on some basic and advanced IBD portfolio management techniques. I always try to leave you with one or more stocks that I think may turn out to be a good investment in the next few days.
Some of you will want to participate in the discussion, and we encourage it ,but you may also just listen. I f you would like to send me questions or topics you wish covered at the meeting in advance please send them to me by e-mail.
Anyone interested in sharpening their investing knowledge and skill should attend. Newcomers are always welcome. I suggest you look at some of the basic educational materials free at www.investors.com or jump into William O'Neils books ,How to Make Money In Stocks and the The Successful Investor, in order to avoid being lost at the beginning of the meeting. As time goes on,you will learn advanced stock picking, trading and portfolio management techniques. You will also meet others who are trying to be their own portfolio manager or independent trader.
