Hi Charlottesville IBD meet-up members,
Our next meet-up is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26th at 7 PM at 918 Emmet Street, Charlottesville . A hearty welcome to our newest members Adam P. , Linda P., Josh C., Mary A., Ayush B., Jane M., Tammy F., and William T. New members, please download and view the New Member Welcome Packet using the link below at the bottom of this email.
At the January 2013 meet-up, I made a presentation on a mechanical approach to investing using IBD and a method developed by Robert Sheard author of the Unemotional Investor.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Unemotional Growth strategy, it is one of the first mechanical strategies developed by Robert Sheard, the original leader of the Foolish Workshop area. It is based on a monthly screen that uses data from both Value Line and Investor's Business Daily. The UG screen starts with the 100 stocks that are rated "1" for Timeliness by Value Line and ranks them by IBD's EPS (earnings per share) rating. Ties are broken by IBD's Relative Strength rating.
The Unemotional Investor was the first book to be issued under the imprint of The Motley Fool. It presents a simple, mechanical approach to investing. No real discussion of technical or fundamental analysis of stocks. My presentation document can be downloaded from our website - http://www.meetup.com/ibd-68/files or at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/22844969/The%20Unemotional%20Investor%20-%20IBD-Value%20Line-%20January%202013%20meetup..docx.
On January 21st, I built a spreadsheet using this strategy that I did share with the meet-up group at the January meet-up. I have updated it through today and I thought I'd share the results with you. Of my original list of 15 stocks, nine stocks or nearly 75% have made some nice gains, from just over 1% (DW) to over 44% (DSO). The remaining six stocks took some hits, a couple were significant. Hence there were some nice candidates for stock or option purchases. This Excel spreadsheet can be downloaded using the link below or from our website http://www.meetup.com/ibd-68/files,
The June 21st issue of Value Line is available. I created a spreadsheet of any stocks ranked #1 (Highest) for Relative Price Performance (next 12 months) listed on Value Line's Timely Stocks and listed them if their IBD Earnings Per Share value is greater than or equal to 90. Hopefully there will be some watch list candidates. Note how this list of highly rated stocks got hit in this last week's pullback.
