Monday, July 8th
Lake Katherine Nature Center in Palos Heights
Mushroom walk at 5:30 p.m.
Program at 7:30 p.m.
Topic: Wood-rotters, Polypores and Other Bracket Fungi
In our Chicago Region, half of the mushrooms and other macro-fungi are wood decomposers. Patrick Leacock, Adjunct Curator of mycology at the Field Museum, will introduce us to these mushrooms and brackets, which have gills, pores, teeth and other types of undersides. Images and actual specimens will demonstrate identification features for common polypores and similar bracket fungi. The mushroom walk before the program will include some tips on tree identification as we look for wood rot fungi.
Please note that this lecture is NOT at our usual location. This one will be held in Palos Heights and will feature a 5:30 p.m. mushroom walk prior to the 7:30 p.m. lecture.
