Underbelly Arts Festival 2011

From the festival's website:

Come to Cockatoo Island this July 16 to explore the new works of some of Australia’s freshest creative talent.

Watch as over 150 theatre-makers, installation artists, musicians, sound artists, dancers, inflatable artists and performers show off the fruits of their collaboration at our Festival day extravaganza.

This is your chance to experience some of the most exciting, innovative and experimental works coming out of Australia, all in the incredible surrounds of Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour. You can explore on your own or go on a tour, watch a show, get lost in an interactive installation or relax to some great music with a drink in the Festival Bar.

The festival runs from 12pm to 10pm. I'll try to be there for most of it.

Tickets are $15 + booking fee if you pre-book online or $20 on the day of the festival when you arrive on Cockatoo Island.

You can get to Cockatoo Island via ferry.

Concession tickets are only $10+BF presale or $15 on the day (on the island). Booking fee is $2.20 I'm going to try and catch the 11:52 express ferry from Circular Quay. My number is O4O5 335 75O.

Their web site says "Pre-sale tickets are no longer for sale. There are still tickets available ? but you can only buy them on the gate on the day and it?s a simple case of first in, best dressed! Good luck!" It's only $2.80 extra on the gate anyhow.

What do they mean by "Good Luck"? And they talk about a "capacity" elsewhere in that forum too. I don't want to be playing a lottery - trains are not running on my line and many other lines too http://www.cityrail.info/service_updates/trackwork/?perio...=

Tim and his 3 guests got their presale tickets in time so they will definitely be there. I am awaiting word from an organiser on their forum on the tickets page.

I am still catching 12:52 ferry and so is Maritza. Should be plenty of tickets available since festival only starts at 12.

They say: "There are still tickets available - these can be purchased at the gate on the day, however there is a limited capacity. Due to the fact that people will come at different parts of the day, the event may reach capacity and then later in the day tickets may be put back on sale. To stay in touch with these developments, follow Underbelly Arts on Twitter and Facebook, or talk to Underbelly Arts staff located at Circular Quay.

I'm running a little late, so I won't be there quite at 12, but should be there by 1 or 1:30. As sqgl said, I have my tickets already, but one of my guests has cancelled, so if anyone needs an extra ticket and can meet me on the ferry or at the gate, give me a ring 0420981589.

Just missed the 1:10 ferry so I'll be there at 2:15. Still have the extra ticket if anyone is interested.

Unfortunately we all bailed by sunset. Hope you made some good connections on the day with fellow artists.

Agree with Maritza but want to say the rest that I saw was lame. It's a novice festival so I was not expecting much. Organisation was great. It was good weather for roaming around the island. All punters were very relaxed and friendly.

Installation and performance art was a large part of this festival. One memorable group of experimental performance artists will remain in my mind for a long time to come. Their number "Rhapsody" was superb full of witty comedy, music and fun!. The name of the group is Whale chorus, worth to watch out for. Vietnamese artist Ngoc Nguyen-Xuan and her work titled "Spring" was another favorite, where the viewer becomes part of the work. She creates a room with all the familiar style of a typical Vietnamese household with food and lollies included. A nice way to get to know other people's cultures.
