Everybody should be able to run their own open-source, indie web applications on hardware they own. That way, only data that we want to get shared gets shared, the rest stays home, nobody uses us as sharecroppers for their bottom line, we can control which apps we'd like to run, and we set our own terms of service. No backdoors!
The Indie Box Project has spawned a Linux distro called UBOS that makes this easy, on all sorts of hardware from Raspberry PI's to virtual x86 servers.
Meetups are generally a combination of discussion of big picture, actual UBOS / Indie Box implementation, and installing UBOS and web apps on hardware you bring. If you have a particular question or want to discuss something specific, speak up!
