New York Film Collaborative Message Board › Statement of Purpose
Hello and Welcome new members!
There has been a lot of talk referencing the name of the group and certainly Jessica and I have tried to succinctly pitch the general concept of collaboration to all the filmmakers out there in New York City, but we haven't yet fully explained what that means... and that's important! So please, read on and I shall clarify our mission as a group.
New York Film Collaborative, Statement of Purpose
1. To provide an environment where creative people who wish to find other people of similar interests can meet and easily access willing participants for their current and upcoming projects.
a. It must be specifically stated that New York Film Collaborative is interested in ALL persons associated with filmmaking, from pre-production through post-production and releases. This includes but is not limited to; writers, producers, directors, actors, camera operators, lighting technicians, sound recordists and engineers, muscians, composers, production assistants, entertainment lawyers, editors, movie house managers, promoters, etc.
b. People involved in NYFC will be encouraged to work together on projects and for members to compensate others out of respect for their contributions. No one will be forced or coerced into an unwilling partnership at any time while involved in the NYFC.
2. To foster an open community of people who want to practice their respective crafts and even create projects within the scheduled time constraints of NYFC meetings. The completed projects will be publicly shown at subsequent meetings. The hope is to create and view many short films during each meeting as well as to provide a venue and audience for member's independent films.
3. The NYFC will encourage participants to operate in as professional a manner as possible. Though we welcome members with diverse interests, our hope is to attract pre-, semi- and professional filmmakers who's work is of high caliber but perhaps lack the experience or clout with major studios or even independent arthouses. The New York Film Collaborative can then be a spawning ground for well-crafted and executed works of filmmaking in any genre - and the group as a whole can act in conjunction as a supportive bolster to each individual member.
a. Professionalism is more than a term which defines a person as getting paid for work in this context - we use it to refer to an attitude intrinsic to success in any field. This encompasses a wide variety of behaviors; promptness and punctuality, integrity, honesty, intelligence, tact when necessary, commitment to quality work, etc.
b. Remember that just as you may be counting on the work of other people to create a well-made film, they in turn will be counting on you to treat their work with respect and appreciation. Please keep that in mind throughout your dealings with other members of the NYFC - and keep it in mind in your general life as good attitudes towards others can really make the world a better place.
4. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the NYFC is a group effort as are all filmmaking endeavors, but a group is just a conglomeration of individuals. And while the democratic process is going to be essential to the functioning of this group, democracy without individual rights only leads to wide sections of people in the minority opinion being squashed and mistreated. The New York Film Collaborative is here to facilitate the coming-together of individuals. Something of a Bill of Rights follows from this mentality:
a. The NYFC will not dictate who will be working on which projects - any decision to that effect will be between the project leader (director/creator/writer/etc) and individual collaborators.
b. The NYFC will not dictate the type of projects or messages expressed within the films of any of our members
c. The NYFC will not abridge any form of speech in meetings and will only moderate the speech on the message board of the website as per the www.meetup.com bylaws.
d. The NYFC will do it's best to recognize individual contributions to the group and no efforts will be made to coerce members in anyway nor will we attempt to license or sell any products created by our members without their express consent.
We are really just here to try to help get people together and create some neat projects as we go. Remember that with rights come responsibilities and the group needs to be self-regulating in that way. We do not wish to condone or even tolerate certain types of speech, (i.e. racist, sexist or otherwise bigotted comments) but as people who respect and value free speech, we cannot ban someone just because they say something that makes us uncomfortable or we disagree with. The best way to deal with people who you do not wish to work with is simply to not work with them. Jessica and I as your organizers will be here to mediate any issues that might arrise if they become problems. Please - let's all just have some fun making films with our friends, new and old!
