Broken Circle Breakdown

How do I explain this movie: I saw it this past January at the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival. Amazing story, great movie, that will have you laughing and crying throughout. Highly recommended, this was Belgium's entry into the Foreign Language category. One of the best foreign language films of the year. (Belgium, 2013) Directed by Felix van Groeningen. Screenplay by Carl Joos and Felix van Groeningen, based on the play by Johan Heldenbergh and Mieke Dobbels. Cast: Veerle Baetens, Johan Heldenbergh, Nell Cattrysse.

Broken Circle Breakdown may be remembered as the movie that introduced the rest of the world to Veerle Baetens. The Belgian singer/actress stars as a woman who lives an idyllic life in the countryside with her husband (Johan Heldenbergh) and young daughter (Nell Cattrysse), singing in a bluegrass band when she is not tending the chickens or enjoying the beauty around her. When their daughter falls ill, the film goes back in time to follow Baetens and Heldenbergh as they meet, fall in love, and bring a new life into the world. Academy Award® nomination, Best Foreign Language Film. 110 min.
