Like Someone in Love

Please Note : location will be posted March 12th

Fresh from the triumph of CERTIFIED COPY, master filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami travels even further afield from his native Iran for this mysteriously beautiful romantic drama.
LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE revolves around the brief encounter between an elderly professor (81-year-old stage actor Tadashi Okuno) and a beautiful student (Rin Takanashi) who moonlights as a high-end escort.
Dispatched to the old man by her boss—one of the professor’s former students—the young woman finds her latest client is less interested in sex than in cooking her soup, talking and playing old records (one that gives the film its title). Eventually, night gives way to day and a tense standoff with the student’s way-too-possessive boyfriend (Ryo Kase).

As usual with Kiarostami, nothing is quite as it appears on the surface. Are these characters—who conjure in one another the specters of regret and roads not taken—meeting by chance, or is it fate? Is this love, or merely something like it?

Thanks, again, Jeff and all. I've never been to a film meet-up where the conversation afterwards stayed mostly on the movie and included so many different and interesting points of view. p.s. If you haven't yet seen "Searching for Sugar Man," which won the best documentary Oscar, it's playing at the Mayan. Lori, who told us that she's seen it twice, and I both highly recommend it.

Glad to hear that worked out at your table as well Ann. My initial impression was not very favorable, but our table's discussion also revealed a great deal of depth and complexity to the film. That's one of the fun things that makes it worthwhile to see films like this.
    Thanks to all!

So, so SORRY !!! Had Iranian movie titles mixed up: "Children of Heaven" (tennis shoes); "Color of Paradise" (blind child); and "Children of Paradise" (1945 French classic). Turns out "Taste of Cherry" isn't the Iranian director's French film about love-obsessed suicide I'm thinking of - with only on-page of Netflix Instant Activity, I'm totally stumped - EGADS!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
