12 Years a Slave

Join us for one of this years most acclaimed films, a sure contender for Best Picture.

12 Years a Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life. Also starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti, directed by Steve McQueen.

Dinner and discussion will follow at The Imperial Restaurant (431 S. Broadway)

Given our recent experiences with Landmark Theaters, I'll do my best to confirm the show time and adjust our time if necessary. Currently, I am looking to do the 3:30 show at the Mayan. The movie runs 2hrs 15 min, so don't want to start much later.

I'll send an email to those who've RSVP'd and on the waiting list on Tuesday evening to confirm the time of showing.

Good to share this film, which wasn't easy to absorb both emotionally and intellectually...
Recently enjoyed Chiwetel Ejiofor in STARZ 6-part series "Dancing on the Edge" - A black jazz band becomes entangled in the aristocratic world of 1930s London as they seek fame and fortune while dealing with prejudice from all sectors. Don't overlook #6, Epilogue - Interviewing Lewis: Stanley interviews the Louis Lester Band at the peak of their success for his music magazine. Intercut with footage of the band playing, topics include fame, race, war and personal stories - nice touch. Highly recommend, especially if you enjoy BBC-style period dramas - ON DEMAND until 11/28.

Attendance was good, sorry for the overcrowding on the tables at the restaurant. Very dark film, but so well acted and clear as to it's subject that it was hard to find a flaw in it. An unsettling look at slavery and one that made African-American anger more real and understandable.

Excellent but very intense film. Would be reluctant to recommend it to those who don't handle gut-wrenching, emotional, and more realistic scenes.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
