Samsara

Samsara is a Tibetan word that means "The ever turning wheel of life", a concept both intimate and vast, the perfect subject for filmmakers Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson whose previous collaborations include Chronos and Baraka.

Some of us saw the preview for this film at last week's meetup, and I was moved enough to decide this should be our next movie.

In the tradition of Koyaanisqatsi, this is a non-linear documentary. There is no dialog, just images set to music. What you take away from this has in large part to do with what perceptions you bring to it already.

Samsara takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation that will transport viewers to countries around the world, as they are swept along a journey of the soul. Through powerful images pristinely photographed in 70mm and a dynamic music score, the film illuminates the links between humanity and the rest of the nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet.

  • RSVPs will not open until next Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., so that everyone will have a chance to see this listing before it fills up overnight.
  • Show time will be confirmed on Tuesday
  • If there is a change of venue, I will post it as soon as I know, and we will not see this if it is moved to the upstairs room at the Esquire.
  • Location for the Dinner/Disussion will be announced when RSVPs open on Tuesday.

Today I find I didn't like the movie as much as I thought I did afterwards and at dinner. I thought the theme/photography/time-lapsing and the whole of the film was pretty brilliant, but I'd rather go see Salmon Fishing...again then see this one!

Really enjoyed the film for its beauty and intensity. Incredible cinematography, despite the outdated projector the theater was using.
I apologize to those who came to the restaurant for not scoping it out in advance....Too loud for conversation and lack of acommodation by the staff there. Will do better next time

The movie was equally intrivying and disturbing. Great selection Jeff to facilitate a robust discussion. Food/drinks and the group made for great night! Looking forward to next time.

Enjoy seeing this type of film - definitely takes you out of your comfort zone and to places and situations you usually avoid, or don't realize exist. Brilliant production and 70 mm photography is pure art.

Ah shucks! Someone stole my book idea. ;-) But I do want to see this movie. But I won't be able to make the movie with the group though due to a prior commitment.
