"Doc Shorts!" Oscar Nominees Presented by the Motion Picture Academy

Please scroll down to see the instructions.

Following the screening, we'll sit down for drinks and discussion at the Cinema Cafe (naturally) 45 E 60th St. Given the number of groups invited, it's too difficult to arrange this using the Meetup website. To reserve a spot, please send your full name, e-mail address to the organizer.

If your plans have changed, please update your RSVP so someone on the waiting list can attend.

Advance tickets to this event sold out in about six hours.  A standby line will form at the venue about an hour before showtime.  In the past, a large number of fans have gotten in this way.  I also plan to attend the Saturday screening of live action and animated short films.   That's not a meetup, but if you're there, say hello.

If you got sold-out you can still see these films at the IFC Center, where they are being presented in two separate programs.  It's more expensive, on the other hand they're giving out free popcorn.

The runtime of the five nominees totals 3 hours and 14 minutes. Allowing for some introductory talk, the screening will let out around 3:30. Drinks and discussion afterwards. Some of you may wish to stay for the 4:30 presentation of live action and animated short films, separate admission required.

This year's nominees are:

Killing in the Name Muslim confronts terrorism following a suicide bomb attack during his wedding.

Poster Girl A profile of a post-war American female soldier.

Strangers No More A look at the multi-national Bialik-Rogozin School in Tel Aviv.

Sun Come Up About the Carteret Islanders in the South Pacific, victims of the rising sea. (Preview available via the link.)

The Warriors of Qiugang A story of chemical pollution in central China. (Preview available via the link.)

This annual event always sells out.

Participants are responsible for getting their own ticket, which will be sold online.

Several groups have been invited. If you're joining us, please only input one RSVP.

If you're not going to be there, your RSVP should say no.

I'll be wearing a Gap baseball cap.

Afterwards, we'll meet for drinks, maybe an early dinner nearby, location TBA.

Eating is not permitted in this cinema.

Participants are requested to keep phones out of sight and out of mind during this meetup. Your cooperation is appreciated. (Now please don't ask for my cell number.)

Please drink responsibly.

Do not waste your time with the meetup check-in feature.

The "Doc Shorts" were excellent in production and content, and this Meet Up Event was well organized.

Melissa, thanks for letting me know. Can you & everybody, put your ticket status in the comment section of your RSVP? I don't like scrolling all the way down here.

Sorry if this all seemed crazy. This has been at MoMA at 5PM on the Sunday before the Oscar ceremony in every recent year. I wanted to give people a heads-up about about the event, so I made an early announcement with a subject-to-change disclaimer. After a surprisingly large number of RSVPs, the time & place have shifted. I should have ticket info by the end of the week. In the meantime, don't miss the Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning!

At Tribeca FF, I saw "White Lines and the Fever, the Fever, the Death of DJ Junebug" a documentary about the dangerous early days of the Bronx hip-hop scene. I thought it was as good as most winners in this category. Let's see if the academy agrees.
