Asian Film Fridays
"Arisan!", Director: Nia Dinata; Indonesia, 2003; 129 minutes (Indonesian with English subtitles)
The Asian Studies Centers of the International Institute present recent films on a theme each semester. Fall 2005 will look at "urban" films. This one is from Indonesia. Arisan! is a wonderfully entertaining delight delving into the lives of three well-to-do 30-somethings in modern-day Jakarta. Sakti is a successful architect who keeps his homosexuality hidden from his mother and best friends, Meimei and Andien, both of whom are suffering their own crises: Meimei is an interior designer and is desperate to become pregnant but her philandering husband shows no interest, while Andien's life is thrown in turmoil when her husband confesses to cheating on her. When Sakti begins an affair with sexy TV producer Nino our closeted hero must maintain a strict charade of heterosexuality, but who is he kidding? When he is chosen to host Meimei's arisan, where a group of women get together to support each other (but end up spitting catty remarks and trying to out-do one another) the stage is set for some truths, and even more bitchy cat-calling! A block-buster in Indonesia, the film features the first on-screen gay male kiss in the history of the world’s largest Muslim nation.
