HMV Next Big Thing - randomly flagging this for the attention of those who enjoy the odd foray into (largely) under-the-radar bands.
The event is spread over 10 days and 9 venues, (2nd-12th Feb) featuring over 100 artists - and it's a tenner to get into each gig. Its a diverse festival which aims to give airspace to music across all genres, so hopefully something for everyone (as reflected below).
You can check out all the artists particpating and buy tickets (£10) here: http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?pPageID=4...
I'm may be tempted by something in the 2012 line-up, but haven't nailed a selection yet. However if you see anything that appeals (either below, or in the rest of the line-up) just shout it out.
This indie shop is pretty democratic, or so the story goes. So likely you'll find one or two other indie geeks around for a gig, even if organisers aren't available.
So here's a taster.... (it's a long post, have a caffiene hit before viewing)

Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny + Kyla la Grange @ The Garage - Thurs 2nd Feb
Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny - whimsy alt.country influenced stuff, with a dark, surreal twist. Onstage Beth normally sports a precarious blonde beehive ala Amy Winehouse. She's a bit ditzy and likes to get her kit off (*see Dodecahedron for evidence)
Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny - Lilliput (I quite dig this track - and love the way it's been filmed as a snuff flick. But seriously, if some maniac was stalking you, would you deliberately run into a maze of underground tunnels? No! Serves her right.):
Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny - Dodecahedron:
I've been watching Kyla la Grange for a few months - she's essentially heiress to the throne of Marianne Faithfull, Classy, rather plaintive voice / strong 60's-influenced songwriting sensibility.
Kyla la Grange - Heavy Stone:

Hadouken! @ The Garage - Fri 3rd Feb:
Electro extremists. Not quite sure why they're part of a 'next Big Thing' lineup to be fair, because they've been around for a bit. They are good value though. I saw them around 3 years ago, and although it's all a bit hazy, I vaguely remember that I had a top night.
Admittedly the singer is a nice middle-class boy with an affected gangsta vocal style - but if you can get past that, and you like your 'hands in the air' stuff - they'll appeal. From the same melting pot as: Digitalism, Does It Offend You Yeah and Late Of The Pier. Maybe even Monarchy on tracks like 'Oxygen'
Hadouken! - Rebirth:
Hadouken: Oxygen:

Belleruche @ Jazz Cafe - Fri 3rd Feb :
Down-tempo shizz, these guys are nu-jazz / electro-swing / trip-hop hybrid which I'm quite liking. Nice vocal, slightly reminiscent of Morcheeba, their sound suggests the possibility of a bit of a smoochy, feelgood gig.
Belleruche - It'll come - LIVE :
Belleruche - Northern Girls:
***************
The Alg0r1thm @ Barfly - Mon 6th Feb:
Supporting, but worth a plug.
22 year-old metal-dubstep / electronica maniac
His motto: ' Math / Mindfuck / WTF''
The Alg0r1thm - Isometry:
The Alg0r1thm - Live @ Euroblast. ( Epic 20 minute set. Only for those with stamina, but give it a spin. If you can't be doing with the full 20 mins then I suggest 'geek alert' that you fast-forward to 6:0 minutes in when it gets quite fun)
On the bill with (headliners) Uneven Structure(Get ready for core....) :

Hanni El Khatib @ Borderline - Sat 4th Feb.
Again, supporting, not headlining - but giving him a mention.
Bit of an oddity, with a sparse approach to his music. He's a Palestinian dude obsessed with doo-wop, vintage R&B and retro Western sounds.
He is an avid skateboarder and designs for skate label HUF. Conceptually a bit weird, and he's been compared to a De Stijl-era Jack White.
Audio bites of his stuff have been picked up by Nike for ad campaigns.(possibly a deficit)
Hanni El Khatib - You Rascal You:
Hanni El Khatib - Loved One:
On the bill with (headliners) The Heavy (Reckon they might mix well with alcohol)

Tom Williams and the Boat + Fiction + Two Wounded Birds @ Jazz cafe - Weds 8th Feb:
Three diverse, reasonably quirky acts on the same bill. Might just work. Vids below:
Tom Williams and the Boat - Get Older:
Fiction - Big Things:
Two Wounded Birds - Night Patrol:

As a postscript (though haven't checked when / where they're playing)...
The mighty We.Are.Animal
Porcelain Raft (might appeal to some too)
"This indie shop is pretty democratic"
say that again and I'll kick you out
"say that again and I'll kick you out"
You're soooo easy to wind up...
I quite like Tom Williams and the Boat + Fiction + Two Wounded Birds. I might be up for this night, good one!
Yeah Tom Williams etc sound ok... nothing really grabbing me today although i'd be up for seeing something new..
@Liz Cloud Control are playing Birmingham, not London - and as cute as that boy was, nothing would entice me that far North. Not even a high-speed HS2 rail link.
haha Fair enough. So which gig are you going to or is it undecided? :S
@Liz Yeah, reckon I'm up for the Tom Williams / Fiction thing, that dubsteppy dude on 6th, and I may go see Beth Jeans Houghton flash her knickers at the crowd
Anyone got a ticket for this Thursday @ The Garage? Keep going on the site but it keeps saying tickets currently not available. Just wondered would it be poss to get one on the night?
@William: It says 'contact the venue for tickets' - this often means the ticketseller has run out of their allocation, but the venue may release extra door tickets on the night. If you're keen on seeing Beth Jeans Houghton I'd call the Garage and check.
Kudos for the video posting! So fair I've decided on seeing The Alg0r1thm (and the prog metal stuff, but they were not decisive factors) on Monday the 6th, will work my way through the rest of the list. Anyone else up of for that one?
William did you have any luck getting a ticket for the Garage? I'm interested in getting one as well and I'll try to call them too.
Hey Jackie I rang the garage, they said to try on the night and they might have some tickets available but depending on questlist they might be able to squeeze a few in. I will prob be round highbury/holloaway road tomorrow eve so might take a chance and try and get a ticket. PM if you fancy meeting up for it. :)
Man, these things sell out fast, Hanni El Khatib + The Heavy and all the other gigs on Saturday are sold out. Got a ticket for the Moshi Moshi triple at Jazz Cafe Feb 8th, many people going to that one?
Double posting -- the ultimate sin.
Anyone else going to Jazz Cafe tonight?
