The IMA's 2011 Winter Nights film series kicks off with Blood Simple, Joel and Ethan Coens' homage to film noir. The skill and assurance of the filmmaking make it hard to believe this is their first film! Blood Simple stars Frances McDormand (Fargo), M. Emmet Walsh, Dan Hedaya, and John Getz in a genuinely noirish tale of lust and murder in a Texas roadhouse. The movie starts at 7; we'll meet for supper and socializing at 6 in the museum's Nourish Cafe (off the main lobby and next to the museum gift shop). Those so inclined can also join us after the show to discuss the movie over coffee. The Winter Nights series runs Fridays through January and February. All films will be screened in the Toby. The theme this year is noir and neo-noir (
