Hey everyone, for June's "Cult Movie Night" I'll be showing two films from Alejandro Jodorowsky at my place. Feel free to bring a drink or a snack to share. We'll order some pizzas between the films.
First is "El Topo", the landmark cult film that began the midnight movie phenomena. It's a quasi-western head trip where classic Americana and avant-guard European sensibilities meet Zen Buddhism and the Bible. Master gunfighter El Topo (Jodorowsky) must defeat four mystic warriors on an ever-increasingly bizzare path to self-enlightenment. It is a film that defies easy description.
Jodorowsky's follow up, "The Holy Mountain" was the scandal of the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. The Alchemist (Jodorowsky) assembles together a group of people from all walks of life to represent the planets in the solar system. The occult adept's intention is to put his recruits through strange mystical rites and divest them of their wordly baggage before embarking on a trip to Lotus Island. There they must ascend the Holy Mountain to displace the immortal gods who secretly rule the universe.
WARNNG: both films are unrated, but contain stong sexual content and graphic violence. Hope to see you there!
