Join us for the monthly movie discussion Meetup at Cornerstone Coffee. As always, the first hour of the Meetup is open to any and all movie-related topics, while the second hour is devoted to an in-depth discussion of the movie of the month.
The August movie of the month is Todd Haynes' Far From Heaven (2002). Julianne Moore stars as a 1950s housewife who must rebuild her life after her husband (Dennis Quaid) comes out of the closet. Dennis Haysbert co-stars as the couple's gardener, with whom she develops a tentative romantic relationship. The film examines the issues of gender, race, sexual orientation and class that that plot summary suggests, but in an unexpected way: through the visual and narrative motifs of a Douglas Sirk melodrama. Far From Heaven will be followed in September by All That Heaven Allows (1955), the Sirk film that was Haynes' primary influence.
