Movie Discussion Meetup: Kurosawa Retrospective

The movie discussion series for 2012 is dedicated to director retrospectives, beginning with four films by Akira Kurosawa (January thru April).

Up next is humanist masterwork "Ikiru", a drama starring Takashi Shimura (the first of Kurosawa's three important actor collaborators) as a low-level bureaucrat with terminal cancer who decides he has to do something meaningful before he dies. For introductory reading: a biographical sketch at the BFI's website.

The first hour of the Meetup is open to any and all movie-related topics. Movie of the Month discussion begins at 8. All "Movie Discussion Meetups" are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, from 7-9 at Cornerstone Coffee in south Broad Ripple.

Availability note: "Ikiru" is available on DVD in a Criterion release and for streaming on Hulu Plus.

There was a good mix of both old and new members, and everyone was encouraged to participate in the discussions. I liked the structure of the meetup. During the first hour each person commented on the last movie he or she had seen, and in the second hour there was a group discussion of Ikuru.
