"Manos" The Hands of Fate is a would-be horror film made in Texas during the sixties. Twenty-plus years after its very brief theatrical release, Manos found a wide audience as one of the most popular and beloved objects of ridicule on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Now, some of the MST3K crew are back for what is described as "hilarious all-new riffing" on Manos. If you've never seen Manos, it is quite the experience- and you won't have many chances to see a movie this strange on a big screen any time soon. http://m.fathomevents.com/details.aspx?eventid=1095&d=8/16/2012 The screening is scheduled to start at 8, so I've set the Meetup time for 7:45- although I'll try to be in the theater lobby by at least 7:30. Since Fathom Events is presenting this screening, expect to pay slightly more than you would for a typical first-run evening movie. (As of yesterday, Fandango wanted $12.50 for an adult ticket to the Manos event.) By the way: I was hoping that this screening would make use of a newly-rediscovered print of Manos.... http://www.manosinhd.com/why-im-saving-manos-the-hands-of-fate/ But since there's no information about the Fathom Event on the page about the new print (or vice versa), as far as I can see, that seems unlikely. (I didn't have time today to read all of the page linked above- especially the comments- but I think the new print may still need some more restoration work before its ready for public viewing.) More info on Manos- including first-hand accounts of its production and it's smashingly successful World Premiere- can be found here: http://www.jophan.org/mimosa/m18/brandt.htm New print or not, this Manos Event sounds like it will be a lot of fun, and I hope to see you there.
