Announcing a new Meetup for Indy Film Buffs Meetup Group!

What: Mexican double feature: Melodrama and wrestling (with El Santo)

When: Friday, November 19,[masked]:45 PM

Where: Indianapolis Museum of Art
4000 Michigan Road
Indianapolis, IN 46208

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is showing a double feature of films from Mexico on November 19 in their Toby Theater. Both movies will be shown by way of DVD, and will have English subtitles. There is no charge for admission to either the museum or the movies.

First up, at 7 PM, is Las Abandonadas (The Abandoned), a 1944 film directed by Emilio Fernandez; it runs 97 minutes. Here's how the IMA's site describes this one: "Dolores Del Rio won a Silver Ariel award (Mexico?s highest film acting honors) for her role as a wife and mother jilted by her womanizing fianc? in this romantic melodrama set in 1914 at the height of the Mexican Revolution. Margarita is forced into working at a whorehouse where she meets a military general who says he wants to save her?but is not what he seems. The film is known for its memorable, lavish costumes the director ordered to be designed for its star."

Next is 1969's Santo y Blue Demon Contra los Monstruos (Santo and Blue Demon vs. the Monsters), directed by Gilberto Mart?nez Solares; it runs 82 minutes, per the IMA's site. Here's how they describe the film: "El Santo is a B-movie folkloric hero in Mexican cinema of the ?60 and ?70s ? a cross between Batman and James Bond. The silver-masked wrestler (lucha-libre) protects his country against all manner of mad scientists and aliens. With irresistible cheesiness, cheap props and unintentionally funny dialogue, Santo Y Blue Demon Contra Los Monstruos presents a bizarre hybrid of the Loch Ness monster and a giant mole for the masked avenger and his sidekick to battle."

So come on out to the IMA for a FREE double feature- or see just one of the two movies. Either way, I hope to see you there.
