Hey everyone, for my January cult movie selections I've chosen 2 films featuring Coffin Joe, the twisted creation of visionary Brazilian writer/producer/star Jose'Mojica Marins. The films are "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul" (1963), and "This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse" (1966).
"At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul" was not only Coffin Joe's debut, it was also Brazil's first horror film. Coffin Joe is an evil undertaker who terrorizes a small religious community in his search for the perfect woman to bear him a child. This film has a truly unique vision that has been called an "unholy blend of Mario Bava, Luis Buruel, and Russ Meyer".
Coffin Joe returns in "This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse", and he continues his quest for the perfect woman to bear his unholy seed. This time his campaign of terror is even more intense. At one point Coffin Joe is dragged to hell and the film changes from black and white to color, just like "The Wizard of Oz". I promise you, you've never seen anything like this.
Feel free to bing a drink or a snack to share. We'll order some pizzas between the films. Hope to see you there!
