Dondo Yaki: The Little New Years Bonfire!

An old tradition that has both secular and religious ties in Japan, the Dondo Yaki or little New Years is a time to finally jump headfirst into the New Year by bringing the trappings of the holiday season and the holiday season itself to a ceremonial and very warm end in a bonfire created with straw and christmas trees! Large shrines in Tokyo have massive pyres of pine and bamboo, we may have to settle for one or a few but please bring your discarded holiday cards, fruitcake, spent ribbons and bows or things from 2009 you think should be included in the bonfire so you can start the New Year fresh and set 2010 fully in your sights. As cold as it is, this is the one way we can all get a little fresh air. Mochi is traditionally roasted over these bonfire's which we hope we may have. We will have hot chocolate, and other warm beverages to keep us toasty near the bonfire and how can we not have smores? Please join us as we really put 2010 in perspective our goals and some exciting new announcements, and as we show get one last defeiant blast at 09 and this terrible weather! We've made it through both and we're not stopping! (this is a joint meetup with the Japanese Culture and Language Group)

Thanks to everyone who made it out, and Nate for giving us the use of his firepit and home. Warm spiced cider for everyone, amazing fun associated with a bonfire, and soemthing I hope we'll continue for years to come.

Not as many people as I was hoping, but great fun for over six hours ^_^ Especially when Stephen showed up and tossed the Christmas tree on the fire, lol. I got to display my wood-chopping skills, how often does THAT happen?

Some overlaps in the two groups obviously, but seems like it should be a great turnout. Hope there's enough room ^_^ It's in my old neighborhood, so that's an added bonus, lol.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
