Beginners Backpack Trip, 1 night

Deam Wilderness.  We'll meet at the Hickory Ridge Fire Tower around noon.  From there we'll hike Axsom Branch over to Terrill Ridge.  We'll follow Terrill Ridge until we get to the cutoff where we will camp.  It's about 2.18 miles to the camp site.  From there we can do some day hiking around, maybe go down to the lake, visit a cemetery, see some ruins or just hang out.  Whatever we do it will be a great time!

The total elevation gain is about 80' from what I can see.  I have uploaded a gpx file:  http://files.meetup.com/712120/Axsom%20Branch%20to%20ruins.gpx

I figure it is as well. May not be too bad in Dec. but the weather always seems to be betwixt and between, rain-not rain, cold-not cold.

Oh, and does anyone bring dogs?

    November 14, 2013

    • John L.

Dogs are always welcome but they must be ok with strangers and at least tolerate other dogs.

Hey everyone, I haven't met everyone who's going but I see that there is a wide range of experience here from the folks that I know. Perfect for anyone who is just starting out! These beginner trips always make for a great time with all of the questions, discussions and yes the ever present opinions of what is best :-).

If you have any questions before Saturday post them here. We'll be glad to answer and help out any way that we can!

I am looking forward to meeting and seeing everyone Saturday!

Some people use tents and others use hammocks. If you can sew a great lightweight option is to use the ray-way 1person tarp at about 14 oz, 74.95 and the net-tent kit at about at about 11.6 oz., 69.95. That is very inexpensive for going that light but they are kits that you sew yourself. www.rayjardine.com. You could also check out gossamer gear's bug canopy http://gossamergear.c... for $35.00, ground cloth for $9 and a cuben fiber tarp from hammockgear.com $200 and up or a silnylon tarp from http://simplylightdes... for $60 and up.

A couple of points here: light usually = dollars and there are many varied shelter systems that you can put together. That is only a small sampling of what you can do. If you want to use a 5lb tent I have one that you can borrow. My suggestion to everyone is borrow if you can until you figure out exactly what you want..or at least pretty close. People on this forum will most likely have and loan you most of what you need until you get it sorted out. For myself it is about staying as light as possible. Other people aren't that interested in it. That's what make the beginners trips so enjoyable. :-)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
