Red River Gorge EXPERIENCED BACKPACKERS ONLY

  • April 11, 2014 · 5:30 PM
  • Red River Gorge

We are going to do more miles than we usually do in this group. Please sign up only after reading the description.

This will trip be a butt kicker, calorie burner, cramps, sore legs, going to bed early kind of a trip. We will see Indian Staircase, Cloudsplitter, Indian Arch, Chimney Top Rock (from the base), Hanson's Point (from the base), possibly Pygmalion Rock, Signature Rock, Buck Point, 22 Windows, Bug Head Rock, Stereo Cove, Cimabue's Cave, Gravity Rock, Frankenstein Rock, Skull Cap Rock, and 2 suspension bridges. This will be a point to point hike so we will need to set up a car shuttle.

We're going to start at Bison Way and camp about a mile from the parking area on Friday night. On Saturday we will follow the Sheltowee Trace trail southwest for about 8.2 miles. Then head southeast on trail 226 for 1.5 miles (jucntion I on the OutrageGIS maps). At Junction H, we will head northeast on trail 220 for 1.2ish miles to Saturday nights camp. Sunday we'll head to junction G and go east on trail 221 for about 3 miles to Swift Camp Creek Parking Area. Then of course, we go to Miguels Pizza so we don't go home weighing less than we did when we started.

It will be about a mile Friday night, 11 miles Saturday, and 3 on Sunday. That's 14 miles in pretty rough terrain.

Pack light. We will be spending most of the time walking so leaving camp comforts at home will be wise. I plan on camping by a water source both nights so that will help as well.

Remember, only sign up if you think you're up to doing this. The route will not change, the climbs will not get smaller, the distance will not get shorter. The pizza however, will be better after 14 miles as compared to 5.

you could have followed-it's a bit less difficult than Indian Staircase. And it avoids walking along the narrow ledge...

I've had a few people email me and ask to raise the group size for friends of theirs. I'm raising the group size to 15. That's a bigger group than I would like. Especially since I've never seen these camp sites. We will split up for at least the hiking part. If one group wants to do a different trail or different route to Saturday nights camp, we can do that too. Would anyone like to volunteer to lead the other group knowing it may not be the same as the description? We can hash out final detail Friday night in camp or Saturday morning.

Most of the cars should be at the end of the trail site. Then someone will have to drive a couple people back to bison way to drop those people back at their cars.

You all are gonna see some good sights down there. Wish I could make this one, but have other plans that weekend. Have a great one!

Anyone want to meet on the Southside around 5:30 p.m. on that Friday? Zack and I are riding together and have room for 2 ,maybe 3 more people and packs. Larry, if you want to ride with us, you're more than welcome. I drive a Dodge Durago and probably get better MPG than most full size trucks.
FYI Radio is broken, doesn't tune in any country stations or play any country cds. Need to get that looked at.
    I also smoke.

      April 5, 2014

Sabrina and I are both off on Friday and will be heading down early. She's never been to that part of the country, so we will do a windshield tour, maybe a wee bit o' day hiking, & find campsite . Room for possibly 2 more- if anyone else is free, you are welcome to ride.

Do we still meet at the Baymont Inn by the barrel of crack at 65 & Southport Rd?

I'm taking my camry down myself and will be passing through Indy around 530. I could take someone down, but I may have to leave earlier than others depending on how late we stay down there Sunday. Any projection on when we will be done at Miguel's?

      April 3, 2014

    • Kyle M.

It all depends on how sore and how fast people are moving Sunday morning. There really is no itinerary for Sunday.

      April 3, 2014

  • Annie H.

I'm not 100% sure I can go, but I definitely want to. Hope it'll work out!

Just want to make sure. Best advice: pack light, wear good boots, sock liners and wool socks to avoid most blisters. Pay attention to your feet, if you start to get a spot that gets warm or hot from friction, take care of it before it's a blister.

      April 3, 2014

    • Sabrina K.

Awesome! I was planning on bringing some mole skin just in case and some other med supplies. If anyone has any requests, I can see what I can get. FYI...I'm a RN.

It will be fun hanging out with some Hoosiers for a change. Was up in Indy for 26 years, but left 4 years ago. Looking forward to this trip. Can someone order up some sunshine?

To help lighten everyone's packs, we should discuss sharing stuff. I can bring a group water filter and first aid kit. I could share a stove with someone too.
