Thanksgiving Weekend Trip

We'll be doing a 11-12 mile loop starting at Fontana Dam in the Smokies. We'll depart from Indy Friday morning and head to the "Fontana Hilton" (an AT shelter) near the dam. Saturday we'll hike clockwise bearing towards Shuckstack firetower. We'll cover 6.4 miles on Saturday camping at site number 90. Along this leg we'll come to Shuckstack firetower. This will be something like a 2100 foot ascent over the 3 miles to the firetower. We'll continue the remaining 2.7 miles to camp on Saturday night at site 90. On Sunday we'll hike back the 5.2 miles to the dam. We'll be back in Indy later in the evening at around 9p.

Is anyone planning on bringing a dog? If so I may be able to carpool down to Gatlinburg

Hi folks...I've not attended one of your trips. A couple questions...do we share food, bring our own? I'm happy to share my tent with someone...or I could just bring my small tent, not sure how warm it is? Will we carpool? Hope its as nice as this weekend, wherever we end going? Where is that, by the way?
    Thanks, Beth

Hi Beth-we usually bring our own food and beverages. We will hopefully figure out the destination and work out carpool arrangements today.

    6) 240 miles to Berea, KT, where there is a great Thai restaurant within sight of the 24-hour Walmart. YUM.
    7) 428 miles/7 hours to Big Spring (Beautiful! Great loop up Mt. Sterling and then clockwise around), but easily another 2 hours to Fontana, whether via Cherokee or Gatlinburg. Hoo boy. Sometimes going AROUND the Smokys (Maryville) may be quicker, but then you have THE DRAGON (Rt 129, with[masked]° turns in 11 miles -- which Phillip should enjoy thoroughly).....
    8) IF YOU FIND YOURSELVES IN THE SMOKYS....with an opportunity to exit to Fontana, via the AT, AT NIGHT. You will be heading down a non-technical trail (walkable without flashlight), down broad mountain slopes lacking leaves, descending steadily to the broadly lit TVA Fontana Dam lit up like it's own city. I'm lacking the words this morning, but it's one of the most beautiful descents I've ever made, and is worth getting back to Indy at whatever hour for it. Worth the whole trip.

    Happy hiking --
    't.

Hey hikers -- some GSMNP thoughts.
    1) Backcountry permit requirements change probably *yearly*, but generally at this time of year, filling out the form available from a prominent parking lot and carrying it on you is pretty much it.
    2) Morning Thanksgiving vacation temps above 5,000' have run from 8°F to 25°F to 55°F on three separate trips. Variety's the spice! Oh, and snow depths to match -- (O" to knee height.)
    3) From Fontana, if you're heading up the AT (nobo), you'll want to do it first thing in the morning, so that as much of your hike is in the warming sun as possible. Spending the night at the Fontana Hilton ($Free) is a great way to start. AND warm showers to finish. YEA!
    4) Southbound from Fontana takes you to Wesser/N.O.C. I think about 48 miles. A great hike, yummy woods, great mountaintop views due North to the Smokys (almost directly across Fontana Lake)
    5) Bryson City has a great greasy spoon ("Beth's"?? "Donna's"??) right off the main drag. Order the potatoes.

I'm on call -uhhgg- Thanksgiving week so I won't be able to make it.

One idea Brett had come up for this trip was going to the Fontana Dam area in the Smokies. Brett and I haven't looked at the details yet but that area might be about a 12-15 mile trip. We're open to other suggestions and working with the group to find a location that'd work for everyone.

Harrison Crawford Forest is located near Corydon and the Adventure trail runs along the Ohio River. I have never done the trail but I have heard it is a good late fall/Winter trail. It is close to 3 hours from Indy. I would be up for Hoosier National Forest. At this point it will depend on the weather for me. I don't mind the cold hikes but certainly not a cold and rainy one.

Where is Harrison Crawford Forest? Trying to think of a nearby location? We could do something in the Hoosier National Forest...do people want to leave Friday morning?

I am interested in joining you guys for a Turkey day weekend trip if it is somewhere close. Has anyone done the Adventure Trail in Harrison Crawford Forest?

Might be fun to head south...Great Smokies-KY or TN? About a 6 hour drive, I believe...Any other ideas/suggestions, yet? I just might join in for this weekend!

I would love to do the Smokies sometime. But what if we went somewhere close for this weekend so people could come and go to make it to the family Thanksgiving dinners and still get some backpacking in (because I plan on needing it). Maybe find a campsite 2-5 miles from a trailhead that's close to Indy. Just a thought.

I am in the same boat as Kyle. I'll check and see though. I would much rather be hiking in the woods than hiking through crowds at stores.

  • Kyle M.

I'll have to see what all is planned with the family. I hope I can make it, but it's probably doubtful. Hopefully Black Friday on the trail is different than in town. LOL
