Eagle Point Buttress. A short but sweet 5-ish mile loop hike, with plenty of opportunity for additional day hiking after setting up camp.

http://toredrivergorge.com/top-10-day-hikes/red-byrd-arch-area/eagle-point-buttress-loop-trail-4-0-miles-unmarked/

Friday night we will be car camping on the river near the trailhead. Sat. packing up and taking the official Osborne Bend/Trail 240 to its junction with the unofficial trail to our campsite at Eagle Point Buttress.  We will set up, and then decide what to do from there-hang out and enjoy the view, wander around some more, whatever.

Easy to moderate trail hike with some minor route finding/bushwhacking to get to the unofficial trail to EPB.

Sunday, we will take the user trail that goes to the base of Eagle Point, drop down to the river and follow the unofficial but well traveled Douglas Trail back to the trailhead.

Unfortunately, Miguels' is closed this time of year, so we will have to find an alternate post hike eating establishment.

Carpool info

we generally meet at the Jameson Inn parking lot located at Southport Rd. and I-65 on Indy's south-side for trips to the Gorge.  We can finalize arrangement's before departure, but it's a convenient place to meet and park.

Any questions, you can message me here or give me a call (317)[masked]

You'll be fine-it's the other people on the road you have to worry about:-)

I'm new and I know one of the most important things is to get a good backpack and a tent, but I am broke. Do you have any recommendations for rental or 2nd hand? Also would a tarp tent be okay with this weather? I've done that before.

      Unless the Mayans were right.

True. It could be a bigger catastrophe than Y2K.

It is kind of off topic....but does anyone like Christmas cookies and fudge? I just received a tray full of them and I cannot eat them all... If anyone has sweet tooth I will be bringing to the trip!!! Thanks!

    December 19, 2012

    • Brett

um, I'm sure no one will help you eat them, especially me:-)

OK, I have never backpacked or camped in a cold weather, especially in December (except for my Machu Picchu backpacking trip). Can anyone tell me what I need for cold weather camping? I have a 20 deg rating sleeping bag, regular tent (no tarp)...I only have a few more days that I can go shopping if I need to...I just don't wanna be a popsicle!

Also, do we need to get some kind of a permit?? I am not sure if it was for RRG but I remember stopping at a local gas station to get it once before...

    December 17, 2012

    • Brett

yeah, we can pick up permits at the gas sation in Slade-$5 per vehicle

If my plus doesn't go, I can leave early. If he does go, it will be after work on fri.

What is the plan for car pooling?

    December 13, 2012

    • John L.

Ok, I can wait until 3 or so. I believe it is about a 6 hour trip to get there. I'll calculate that later. Brett, is it just the three of us? Doesn't make much sense for you to drive down by yourself.

      December 14, 2012

    • Rumiko

I am off Fri also and I am up for either driving and splitting the gas cost or riding with the carpooling cars. I can wait till after 3pm!

If I can get the gear together based on the recommendations provided in the link below (I have alot of it already), is this trip suitable for a novice? I definitely don't want to get in over my head and hold the group up.

    December 10, 2012

    • Brett

Yeah, what John said:-) We can help you out with gear and info. If you have any questions, let us know!

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make this trip. Too many things going on before the holidays and not enough time to get everything together. I'll keep working on my gear and try to catch the next trip. Have fun! So far, the weather looks to be chilly but decent.

Here is a map of the area and trail. http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1713260

There are 2 different parking areas, one of which is about a 2 mile hike along the highway if we complete the loop. If we complete the loop it is about 7 miles. The elevation is about 400 ft. 2 parking areas available. Osborne Bend Trailhead (larger parking area) - Take KY 77 through Nada Tunnel. Continue on 77 to KY 715. Follow 715 approximately 7 miles to the parking area, just before the one-lane bridge that crosses the Red River.

Roadside pull-off: Off of KY 715, this trailhead is about 4.5 miles from the junction of KY 77 and 715. An unmarked pull-off for parking is available on the right side of the road. The trail is on the left. A small wooden sign marks the start of the trail. I also found an unmarked trail: http://toredrivergorge.com/top-10-day-hikes/red-byrd-arch-area/eagle-point-buttress-loop-trail-4-0-miles-unmarked/

I'm sure Brett has it figured out.

    December 10, 2012

    • Brett

I was thinking the shorter loop, and maybe some exploration once we set up

      December 10, 2012

  • Carla

I'm new to this. What would I need to have for the trip and how long are they?

    December 2, 2012

  • Rumiko

    Any potential locations yet?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
