Ruby on Rails Outreach Workshop FOLLOW-UP!

As a follow up for our Rails outreach workshop, we'd like to get together again and do some more beginner coding together. We'll start by talking about plain old ruby and then expand upon our Suggestatron app and allow time for any questions you may have. Once again, people with all levels are encouraged to attend. If you have any specific topics/questions you'd like to cover, please leave a comment and we'll try to code an example and talk about it. If you haven't already, try to install rails before you come.

If you missed the first workshop, do not despair! Work through the curriculum as best you can on your own. (Both the Suggestatron app and the intro to Ruby, up to slide 32.) Our lovely volunteers will be there to help you, answer your questions, and get you caught up if need be.

We want the content workshop to be largely tailored to and built for YOU! We will, of course, have plenty to cover regardless. However, we want to hear what it is that you want to learn to do. Please let us know in the comments, or on the mailing list. ([masked])

Thanks so much to all of the volers and tspeakeasy for letting us use the space and Mobi for the food and coffee. Here are the slides that I used
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0... and if you're feeling paticularly adventurous, here are my notes https://docs.google.com/document...

    Until next time ...

Not going to be able to make it after all. Got an out-of-town overnight quest, up too late--not going to be able to do the getting up at 6 a.m. and driving 2 hrs. tomorrow a.m. Hopefully, another time...by then, will need to start over, probably!

I have had to get a part-time job as I am still looking for a career job. So I won't be able to make it this time. I really wish I could though

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. There are a lot of people coming this time that weren't at the first workshop, so we're going to split into 2 groups. The first group will talk about basic ruby and the Suggestatron (my first rails app) tutorial. For the second group, I'll be taking about a variety of things that people asked about - troubleshooting strategies, sessions, and Active Record (at least).

Haven't used Ruby or even looked at anything related to coding since the Outreach workshop, so I feel like a slacker, but I'm still feeling drawn to this coding world for some reason. Hoping some of what I learned will come back to me and I'm looking forward to the brain challenge--my head hurt from being stretched last time! (It was EXCELLENT, btw.
