The original purpose for this group (started back in 2003) was to foster the pursuit of "intentional communities" - we primarily focused on housing ideas, though broader suggestions were also welcome (such as member potlucks - a tool for general building of community).
When Meetup started charging organizers (long ago it was free), Rodney thankfully repeatedly held onto the vision and devoted time and of course money for this group to continue. When he stepped down in 2011, another member saved it for a full year. This time, it came down to the last day and no one stepped up... So, as a long-time meetup member since 2003, one of the original members of this particular group (even suggested the topic to meetup before it existed), and knowing this was the second IC group to ever form on meetup (hence the "intentionalcomm-2"), I decided it was worth paying for one month to perhaps revive it again.
Since I decided this last minute, I will have to work out a better message for the welcome page. I will also try to figure out how to facilitate this group moving forward for the long term. The very first step though is determine funding for this group to continue on Meetup.
We currently have 71 members and it costs $72 for 6 months of service here. If everyone gave just $1 (without paypal fees), we are covered. In this group, no judgment will be placed on financial contributions. I assume that we all have different abilities, opinions, etc. and there are many reasons that cause some to not give money and some to give extra. I believe it can and will even out for the good of all. So, I simply ask that everyone please look to yourself and, if possible, please give at least $2-5/year to keep us going. Every penny will benefit this IC group -- first, it will cover fees for meetup and paypal as needed, then any "extra" will be appropriately used for group benefit, whether event food, space, activities, education, or saved for future fees.
