Object-Oriented JavaScript (yes, it really exists)

Did you know that JavaScript has a rich object framework for handling most OOP concepts? This talk is a crash course in object-oriented JavaScript programming covering constructors, inheritance, public and private methods, and more.

Speaker bio: Jordan Kasper

Upon arrival at his home in 1993 Jordan began disassembling  his first computer... his mother was not happy. He quickly  moved from hardware into programming, creating simple games  on his i386 and, soon, various TI calculators. In 1997 he began  working on his first web sites, they were crude and ugly. His  focus has been on web application development ever since. He  has worked for companies large and small, a couple startups,  and is a contributor on a number of open source projects.  Teaching and speaking is becoming a way of life for Jordan, and  he loves evangelizing the technology he loves. In his down time he enjoys puzzles of all sorts and board games.

Thanks for posting the slides! I had been looking forward to your presentation for several weeks, but my wife went home sick yesterday so I had to skip the meeting to take care of my daughter. Bummer. Looking forward to the video as well.

Great presentation last night, and as a follow up I'm looking for a JavaScript Developer with an understanding of Object Oriented principles for a full time position that I have open. Link to the full job description here (http://goo.gl/2Afc5). Feel free to connect with me even if this position is not a fit for what you are looking for right now.

I don't guess the talk would be recorded by any chance?

We do Object-Oriented Javascript hardcore at Raven Tools, but it would be nice to see how others do it.

    • Jordan Kasper

Glad to hear it Jonathan! Keep in mind that this talk will be all about core JS OO structures, so not exactly how another shop would do it ( you should be using a framework ;) ), but I will mention a few frameworks.

Security of Object-Oriented..., would be a bonus.
    Keep it up and Secure!

    February 13

    • Jordan Kasper

Thanks for the suggestion Chuck! Are you referring to private versus public members of objects, or about security in general with JavaScript? Or something else?

      February 13

    • Steven Brownlee

Yeah, security in a JS app would require a full-blown presentation to truly do it justice.

      February 20

  • Dave

Will you be covering any OOP JS frameworks?

    February 20

    • Jordan Kasper

I'd love to... and I will mention at least one, but there won't be time in an hour presentation to truly cover any. I'll be sure to include some reference links though. Thanks for bringing it up!

There have been a lot of new attendees since my last comment so I wanted to ask again: let me know if there are any specific object-oriented concepts or issues you want covered in this talk!

    January 24

  • Jordan Kasper

If you have any OO concepts you want specifically covered, let me know! We'll have to move pretty fast through the material, but I'll pay a little more attention to topics mentioned here beforehand.
