English Debate Club

This week's topic:

Should we be concerned about how much information is accessible online about us?  Are targeted ads based on our browsing or online shopping habits really a benign irritance, or such information be used to control or harm us?  Do we know who has access to our personal details and habits?

The English Debate Club:

Challenge and improve your English skills with lively discussions and debates!  Sometimes we stick to debate format, other times it evolves into a general discussion.

Topics will be set at least a week in advance (please feel free to message the group leader with topic suggestions) and participants are welcome to prepare beforehand or wing it - but everyone will be encouraged to contribute to the discussion.  Teams will be assigned on the night, so be prepared to argue either side of the debate.  There will be some preparation time once teams are assigned.

Focus will be on crafting arguments in English, phrasing for emphasis and expanding vocabulary at an advanced level.  Native English speakers who would like to brush up on their debating skills very welcome also!

I think you did great. You have a nice way of keeping the discussion under control by keeping focus on the main topic and picking the most interesting directions of inquiry.

I missed today's debate even though it was my favorite topic (I had to support my club today in Swedish badminton elite series), anyway, I would like to suggest a topic in which we could discuss solutions to our privacy issues if you guys haven't done that yet :-)

I have worked it out that if I want to work late, or be sick, or have something come up at the last minute, all I have to do is RSVP here on a Tuesday night and it just happens! So if I actually want to join tomorrow I should actually NOT RSVP right? So consider me NOT coming tomorrow night. See you then!

Bruce Schneier, one of the foremost security experts in the world, has this to say on the subject:

"The Internet is a surveillance state"
