English Debate Club

This week's topic:

Should illegal drugs be legal? Should legal drugs be illegal?

Many people all over the world use drugs in ways that aren't legal in their jurisdiction. Sometimes it's recreational drugs such as marijuana and ecstasy, other times its performance enhancing drugs such as musicians in symphony orchestras using beta blockers or body builders and actors using testosterone enhancing drugs. Students and researchers use amphetamines for cognitive enhancement

How dangerous are drugs that today are classified as illegal? Is it an infringement on personal freedom to keep them illegal? Or should they be made legal simply for the reason that keeping them illegal creates a criminal sector of the economy?

Many experts remark that if alcohol would have been introduced today, it would be outlawed due to the violence and physical decay that it can be a co-factor of.

The English Debate Club:

Challenge and improve your English skills with lively discussions and debates!  Sometimes we stick to debate format, other times it evolves into a general discussion.

Topics will be set in advance (please feel free to message the group leader with topic suggestions) and participants are welcome to prepare beforehand or wing it - but everyone will be encouraged to contribute to the discussion.

Focus will be on crafting arguments in English, phrasing for emphasis and expanding vocabulary at an advanced level.  Native English speakers who would like to brush up on their debating skills very welcome also!

Please note that the basement is in the very back of the café. Many new participants don't find it on the first try. Just walk as far into the corner opposite the entrance door as you can, and you will se the staircase leading down.
