English Debate Club

This week's topic:

With only 9 million speakers, is the Swedish language's days numbered? Should it be? Is there a value is speaking a relatively minor language or is mutual comprehension essential to today's increasingly global society? The EU was created for ease of migration and skills going where they're needed, but a qualified Spaniard can't get a job in Munich or London if they only speak Spanish - does that defeat the purpose?

The English Debate Club:

Challenge and improve your English skills with lively discussions and debates! Sometimes we stick to debate format, other times it evolves into a general discussion.

Topics will be set at least a week in advance (please feel free to message the group leader with topic suggestions) and participants are welcome to prepare beforehand or wing it - but everyone will be encouraged to contribute to the discussion. Teams will be assigned on the night, so be prepared to argue either side of the debate. There will be some preparation time once teams are assigned.

Focus will be on crafting arguments in English, phrasing for emphasis and expanding vocabulary at an advanced level. Native English speakers who would like to brush up on their debating skills very welcome also!

Claire, I can report that Jörgen moderated quite all right with just one or two minor things that could have been improved=)). With regard to the subject - it seems there's plenty of room for further discussion. For instance the aspect of EU beeing a united labour market with higly mobile people - didn't talk aboult that at all, wich was a pity because we actually could have got an EU update from Winnie, a native Belgian, and participants who lived in another European countries could have talked about their experiences with minor and not so minor languages. I guess I better mail you my suggestions=))
In any case - thanx everyone! That was good to debate with you all!

Otherwise, good idea, we could speak about the EU some time, language-related or not. I'm here on an EU-sponsored programme, too.
