Indy ESL/ICE Initial Meetup and Brainstorm

  • January 20, 2008 · 2:00 PM
  • Scholar's Inn Bakehouse

We'll use this first meetup to get to know one another and determine how best to get this group started. Your participation is essential to help define this new group and get it off the ground. What kinds of events would you like to see? How often do you want to meet? Where do you want to meet? Bring your ideas and enthusiasm! Here are a few initial ideas that have been presented:

*Monthly "language" gatherings (or "tertulias" as we used to call them in Spain). There would be a different discussion topic for each month. Depending on participation, we can divide the group into tables (at the same location) based on languages (i.e. French, Spanish, Hindi, etc.) and have each group speak in that language for an hour or so. Then, we can mix the groups up and hold discussions in English. This would give everyone a chance to practice their languages and socialize too. biggrin

*International Potlucks - think of all the wonderful, tastes and smells...you might even discover a new favorite!

*International Game Night - ever wondered how to play Carom? Or how about improving your language skills by playing multi-lingual Pictionary? Learn about cultural nuances through Apples to Apples? *Attend local cultural events - the Indians Indians (East Meets West) at the Garfield Arts Center or the International Festival at the State Fair Grounds are fun examples of past cultural events offered in Indianapolis. And some of them are even *FREE* - how cool is that? cool

As an ice-breaker, please bring a word or phrase (in any language) to share with the group. It could be a word that holds a special meaning for you - maybe you identify with the meaning, it evokes fond memories or you simply like how it sounds. I look forward to meeting you all!

We had a good turnout with a lot of good input. I think we're going to have a great group and I look forward to more events with everyone.

Was very good size and nicely diverse group for a "first" meeting! Hopefully, as a group, we can bring together both fun intercultural social activities AND several opportunities for members to network together to learn a variety of languages in a relaxed and friendly setting! Kudos to Shaun for organizing and her thorough note -taking skills- Look forward to posting a variety of events and utilizing all the Meetup tools available to connect people with the same language/cultural interests!

It was pleasure to meet everyone, I enjoyed the brain storm to propose the activities and the ideas interchange about the purpose.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
