We'll use this first meetup to get to know one another and determine how best to get this group started. Your participation is essential to help define this new group and get it off the ground. What kinds of events would you like to see? How often do you want to meet? Where do you want to meet? Bring your ideas and enthusiasm!
Here are a few initial ideas that have been presented:
*Monthly "language" gatherings (or "tertulias" as we used to call them in Spain). There would be a different discussion topic for each month. Depending on participation, we can divide the group into tables (at the same location) based on languages (i.e. French, Spanish, Hindi, etc.) and have each group speak in that language for an hour or so. Then, we can mix the groups up and hold discussions in English. This would give everyone a chance to practice their languages and socialize too.
*International Potlucks - think of all the wonderful, tastes and smells...you might even discover a new favorite!
*International Game Night - ever wondered how to play Carom? Or how about improving your language skills by playing multi-lingual Pictionary? Learn about cultural nuances through Apples to Apples?
*Attend local cultural events - the Indians Indians (East Meets West) at the Garfield Arts Center or the International Festival at the State Fair Grounds are fun examples of past cultural events offered in Indianapolis. And some of them are even *FREE* - how cool is that?
As an ice-breaker, please bring a word or phrase (in any language) to share with the group. It could be a word that holds a special meaning for you - maybe you identify with the meaning, it evokes fond memories or you simply like how it sounds.
I look forward to meeting you all!
