Do you want to start the next last.fm?

Some of the best web companies of the UK have started in the East End, and there is a growing community of creative people working with internet technology in and around Hackney who could benefit from better professional networks.

This is why you should attend one of two free events to be held at Space Studios (Mare Street) on 1st of May and 15th of May. (if you need child care pls email info at openbusiness.cc

The events will kickstart a network of web entrepreneurs, developers, designers, new media artists and the wider tech community in Hackney.

Our overall goal is to stimulate growth of the digital ecology in Hackney contributing to the sustainability of the cultural sector in the borough.

Who will come?
web entrepreneurs, new media artists, web developers and designers, digital agencies, interactive designers, tech VC's, institutional funders.

Speakers:
Some of Hackney's most inspiring web entrepreneurs, new media artists and also funders ranging from London Development Agency to the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts.

Organizers:
OpenBusiness, Space Studio (is fully accessible), and artist, Larisa Blazic.
Funded through Hackney Arts Media Cluster (Hackney Council).

Very nice having a local group organised by Christian. Will certainly go again if future meets are arranged.

Thinking about the format some more, it might be nice to have an (optional) open mic spot where people can say a few things about what they do/offer or are doing/want. It makes finding people to talk to later that much easier and also rather less random.

Some people may not like this - they could prepare a short paragraph that gets read out by the compere and then all they do is wav. This would also be alot quicker.

Was interesting to hear that some of Ken's LDA consultancies are securely contracted for a further three years
Enjoyed getting a look at John's new OLPC (One Laptop Per Child http://laptop.org/en/laptop/)
I'm curious what form future events might take

An awesome event, really nice to meet some of hackney's hidden talent in such a bustling context.

This was a great event. I met people that were skilled, interesting and most importantly, local. I've worked in Hackney for over 10 years, and wrongly thought I knew all the interesting people and companies already. From the moment I got there, I was chatting to passionate people each with their own interesting niche. I had long and involved chats with a few key people, and generated not only potential leads but also discovered other companies that could help us round our service.

because it doesn't yet have a mission, the speakers could be vetted to provide greater substance. perhaps people could be discussing new developments.. like mini-bar but longer and more about the problems and overcoming them. i got the feeling that the people that were there are open-minded types who would be up for looking into radical ideas.

If anyone that wanted to speak to me at the meeting today didn't get a chance, please feel free to visit http://darq.com/contact/contact... and give me a shout. If you've got some kind of network requirement we can probably help you out.
