CSI is pleased to announce our latest initiative: the Freedom Exchange project. As you can see from the new website (www.csifreedomexchange.org
), CSI is advocating for an exchange of certain prisoners between the US and Cuba. Essentially, those prisoners are in jail for alleged crimes of a political nature, mostly involving espionage and related activities. In these difficult times, dominated by serious conflict around the world and the constant threat of terrorism, the relationship between the US and Cuba remains stuck in an anachronistic Cold War mode. Through this project, we are hoping to bring about the freedom of many individuals as well as an improvement in relations between the two countries
The novelty of the Freedom Exchange project is to advocate for two different things at the same time, that is the release of prisoners in both Cuba and the US. We are hoping that the two countries will make a reciprocal gesture of good will and exchange prisoners. Our effort is to be distinguished from those advocacy projects that only represent the interest of one group or political faction. For that reason, we are spearheading a coalition, which we hope will include noted persons and organizations with different interests, points of view and political backgrounds.
This new initiative, which we plan to extend to several conflict areas, represents CSI?s proactive work and complements our educational mandate. The project, however, requires more than just a passive assessment of human rights issues and conflict situations. It requires the active participation by the CSI community both in Washington and in the other cities where we are present. More specifically, we need your help in building the coalition.. We are interested in noted individuals, organizations, political parties and churches.
The new site is pretty straightforward and offers viewers a mechanism to join the coalition. If you have suggestions or would like to refer someone for inclusion in the coalition, do not hesitate to contact us at our usual address: [address removed]. In the meantime, we wish you a belated Happy New Year and hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks and regards,
CSI Freedom Exchange committee
