Web Typography 101

Leah Carlson and Breahna Galbreath will be leading a discussion focused around making informed web typography choices that fit a website and it's audience.

Some things we've been asked to go over:

  • The differences between serif and sans-serif fonts and when to use each.
  • How to know what fonts to use on a website.
  • Ways to improve readability in text online.
  • Where to find fonts.
  • Tools for testing fonts.

Note: This event is on a Tuesday to try to accommodate those who can't make Wednesday evenings.

For those new to the group: we'll start out with a presentation which will turn into a question and answer session and discussion. Some snacks and drinks will be provided, but if you'd like to bring something to contribute, that's welcome too. As this is a U of Iowa building, we're not allowed to bring alcohol.

Please try to RSVP if you plan on coming. It helps if we can have enough chairs set up for everyone ahead of the presentation.

We will meet afterwards at Gus's in Coralville to get social. Here are some directions.

Hope to see everyone there!

Looks like a really cool tool! I just compared the &'s, f's, and g's of several fonts and can really see the difference. I wonder if he will include numeric characters in the future.

Really cool video! I thought it was funny how Caslon IV got sick of serifs and did something that was unheard of for the time. Great things come out of people solving problems.

Here's a fun resource for graphic designers (not a web font): 1001freefonts.com.

You can pay for a CD that has 10,000 fonts that are licensed for personal or commercial use. Mac and Windows.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
