In the age of the Internet and so-called reality television, never before has it been easier to become famous for nothing at all, and never before has more fiction been packaged as truth.
In REALITY, director Matteo Garrone paints a portrait of Luciano (Aniello Arena), an Italian patriarch obsessed with the elusive specter of modern stardom. A husband, father, and fish-shop owner by day, Luciano dreams of being much more. At the suggestion of his family, he auditions for Italy’s version of Big Brother a program known the world over for rocketing everyday people into the world of temporary stardom. After his audition, Luciano convinces himself that he’s already on the path to fame, and with the intoxicating encouragement of friends and family, he sets about rearranging his life entirely around the expectation that celebrity and fortune are only moments away.
As Luciano waits for the call-back, he may be on the verge of finally reaching his dreams, or he may be altogether lost in his distorted fantasies. Garrone blurs the lines between reality and imagination, delving into the psyche of a man, and a culture, that may prefer fiction over reality.
